If a building was commissioned by a steel company then what should it be made of? Steel and all things shiny obviously! Because of the Depression and WWII there was no new construction in Chicago's Loop (business area) until this building was commissioned. It was a ground breaking building in many ways! The most obvious being that it was a steel and glass clad building with a new age construction among traditional solid brick built buildings!
Looking at all of the shots I took of this building I realized so many of them were variations of one theme...a look up shot, trying to find that one perfect shot to post! I am closing in on the end of my fourth year here on 365, and in my fifth year I want to work more on series of photos that link together and tell a story.
Thank you for the back story, it adds a heap of meaning to this excellent shot. I've been enjoying these shots of this strong building by your good self and @taffy. The down to up shots have brought out the essence of this building, one which must've been quite extraordinary in the nadir of the Great Depression. Such a structure would also have provided work for many unemployed men and been such a boon to the city.
Imagine the excitement when this new style of building was constructed! So interesting Andie - I love to hear about the history of Chicago and the way it was built! Your images as well as Taffy’s @taffy continue to fascinate me! Fav!
@pamknowler Thanks Pam! @taffy and I are having a lot of fun doing these tours, they are definitely giving us new found appreciation for the city, its history and the buildings!
