Heya,
I've noticed a heap of oil an water photos lately... Thought we could share on here an also discuss different techniques...
I did this a while back, I had a glass sitting on white paper, dropped oil into the water then dropped red food dye into the oil.. This was the result...
This is a tumbler full of water, with a teaspoon or so of olive oil. The glass is resting on top of "something colourful"... in my case, this was an image from a quilting magazine that I found in my apartment lobby.
@ltodd Thanks for the tip about the detergent. After getting the flat looking drops, I tried using a drop of detergent, but it was obviously too much. I’ll try the trick of putting a smudge on a knife as you suggest. What type of oil did you use?
@lisabell I think it was probably ordinary olive oil - I wonder if a more refined oil would act differently? I just opted for what was closest at hand! :) Off camera flash or a side lamp / torch pointed at the wrapping paper etc to reflect the light from 45 degrees & behind the drops will add 'depth' too.
I can't believe how different these all look with essentially the same concept. This is my one and only attempt but I think I'll try again at some point.
@michaelelliott Oh this is just the coolest!! At first I thought, huh? Oil and water? Then I read on that it was on the road... lol... bet people thought you were the crazy man!! Nice to see you posting. Hope you and your family are doing ok :)
This was my first one.
It was such a strange set-up. I used two chairs and balanced the glass dish with one hand on each chair. Then, I use broom & mop sticks under the chairs so I could build a plateform of some decorative paper that I put on the plateform I built. I used a flash light as a light source.
Same type of set up but I didn't use a flashlight I used natural window sunshine as the light source.
Decided to give this a go over the weekned after a failed set of shots using water drops on glass. Quite like this one. Not perfect but a good start I think?
It was such good fun.
And just oil on glass, again with wrapping paper below.
There are links under both photos to other ones I did on the same days.
Oil and water in a dish placed over cushion cover! Never tried anything like it before, but was great fun!!
i am so bored today..maybe it's time to try this again
thanks Sam @sam_cr for this discussion

Monochrome version
Olive oil, water, food coloring and gift wrap paper ...
One of mine have lots of them, olive oil, water and gift paper
and this one ~ same method of lighting, but using jelly beans below and edited somewhat to add the light bursts
First time for me, was so inspired by all the wonderful shots on here I HAD to try it out today.
This is my first attempt i did it tonight! I used Cassandra's @ @ozziehoffy technique and it was great fun! :)
