A Photograph That's Moved You Beyond Words

June 17th, 2013
Hello Fellow Photographers,

Have you ever captured a moment that has rendered you speechless? I'm starting this thread because I don't believe for a moment that I'm the only person that's felt this way about a photograph. Would you please allow us to see your sacred image? You aren't obligated to explain why it's so personal to you, unless you wish to.

I cannot describe to you how my photograph has moved me simply because it has shocked me beyond words. This photo encompasses everything about the individual and oddly enough, me as well.

Please consider sharing with us.

Fondly, Betsie

My friend @lubybee is the wife of this man. She elected to share with us her thoughts on this photograph:
"This is stunning, you know. Fav squared! You captured him and all he's been through these past months. This is my husband Greer, who after a near death experience and heart surgery in January is back to singing Wotan in Wagner's RING this summer. You captured who he IS in this shot."

This was a lucky shot through a window and I didn't realize what I had until I put it on screen. Angel bird to me

Lady, you specialize in moving photos.

I have a couple: one I just shared today. It moved me to pray for the young, busy mama when I looked at it and pondered her situation. I feel blessed that I saw this scene and snapped to capture them.

And one more of a lady living on the wrong side of the tracks, yet making the best of it.

And maybe this one for more personal reasons:

I was asked by a friend to take a portrait photo of their dog, Yanna. She had been diagnosed with cancer. I was nervous as I had never done any type of portraiture. This was my favorite shot. It brings tears to my eyes as she died only a week later. Yanna was loved by all who had the opportunity to know her. I now feel honored to have been asked to take her final photo.

This photo by @tbats22 really touched me. As a dog lover and owning two myself (as well as losing my own in the past) I could definitely understand the feeling here. It brought me to tears.

This one... And my profile pic. Every time I look at it.

With three kids and three dogs at home, you can imagine what a one week trip for just the two of us to Kauai, HI meant for me and my husband:

I did this picture for my one and only tag challenge. The words came to me in the shower, before one shot was taken. When it was all finished, I had that moment where time stopped. Created from a life once lived. @eyesofbetsie

This says it all for me!

I took this about 2 weeks before the death of a very close friend. This was a sort of therapy for me because you know, not everyone knows what to say and some people were saying some wildly inappropriate things without realizing it. I got my camera and wandered off alone to keep from saying things I'd later regret.

photography as therapy

I don't know if "beyond words" would be exact, but I love this photo of my husband, on our anniversary, at the Atlanta Steeplechase, wearing my daughter's homemade hat (for the kids' hat contest) while she takes a camel ride...it's one of those moments where I'm so glad I married a particularly spectacular man--who is funny, and not afraid of some looks (he's rather shy by the way)! So this photo helps capture all that goes beyond words! :)

Not the best photo, but she made me stop and think about my life.

I stood in silence for quite a while, before taking this shot.

its actually the opposite... I was torn up not knowing what to do to help this helpless baby raccoon and took a picture because somehow, I wanted its life to matter

From today.

It's about life beginning anew and being so privileged and blessed as to be able to witness this. This comes on Father's Day in the US - a day to remember and honor my father even though I can no longer reach out and hug him. It made me think about endings and beginnings and the continuity of life beyond what we can always see.

The hardest photo I have ever taken. A hitchhiker, a perfect stranger, a man with history. Please click on the photo and read the full story, I know a few of my followers will remember this shot.

This one of Ruth Moucharafieh's @ruthmouch. It's some of the little Syrian refugees on the street in Beirut. They've escaped from the horrors of war, their future is uncertain - who knows where their next meal may come from, let alone any chance of education, and they may well have lost family - but they can still smile. This picture says so much about resilience, and living for the moment, in the present.

Doing research among the poorest communities in Kenya and Uganda over the past three years has often moved me to tears. This is taken from the playground of one of the schools we're working with in the Nairobi slums. The children live in these homes and depend on a midday meal of maize meal cooked at the school. Many are orphans.

My one day old daughter after being admitted to hospital with breathing difficulties, we were there for a week and discharged home without a clear diagnosis. regular appointments and phone calls with doctors, resuscitation training, possibility of tracheostomy.

4 months on and things seem to be getting better, but we still try not to let her cry as this can trigger things off, but she is safe and growing as you can see...

I was a little lost for words here...!!! LOL

I took a group of children to France to cycle down through the Normandy D-Day landing beaches, along the way we took in American, English, and German war cemeteries - I was in awe of the reverence with which these 12 - 16 year-olds treated the places we visited,

This picture shows a simple paper poppy (for those in non-commonwealth counties this simple poppy is worn as a sign of remembrance for those that fell in war)

This one had been left by someone on a plaque at the La Cambe German war cemetery......

This is a photograph of my best friend with her newborn son, Lucas. He had been hooked up to an IV and stuck in the nursery from the time he was born 2 days before until just as I was on my way up to the hospital to visit. Mommy was just getting to really snuggle him for the first time.

I really love this one as well...

take the boat tour down to the base of niagara falls, hear the deafening sound of the water falling from 167 feet above, and get splashed on by the mists created by the falls, those are enough to make one have a different perspective on life and things. i met someone, an atheist, who had taken the tour, who said that when the boat reached the foot of the falls, there was an instant, a very brief instant, that he thought of how powerful was the God who created it. he bought a copy of this photograph from me.

This was back in July 2012, when I traveled to Nepal to interview traditional healers, as part of my Ph.D research. This whole experience was a blessing and is represented in this picture. Wonderful humble people sharing their stories and knowledge with me.... I'll never forget it. Thank you for starting this discussion and bringing back memories.... :-)

There are several pictures I have taken in the film days that really struck me. Auschwitz. The DC Holocaust Museum. Volunteering in Nairobi and Mombasa.

There are a couple that I go back to from the last couple of years of 365.

This one showing hardship. Life on the streets:

And this, a day of love:

@irishmamacita10 that is one of the photos that has most moved me here too. Such raw emotion

@bobfoto I also remember this one very well. The story and the photo moved me

I took this shot near a beach. She was thin, fragile, begging, yet had a twinkle in her eyes full of life.

Great thread.

Mine is actually a photograph of me that was taken by my missus. I was in Milan with my wife (then fiancee) and got a call from my family telling me that my grandmother (and last grandparent) has just passed.

I lit a candle for her in the church even though she's buddist - but it made me feel better doing something for her to let her know i was thinking of her

I took this for my friend's memorial page, to remember the passing of her little girl Beth, who was not even 2 when she was tragically taken from this world. Beths mother sees rainbows as Beth shining through, and that shes still her with her. its not so much this pic, as seeing rainbows that moves me

Mel

Me and my baby, who is fast becoming a boy - these moments will all be gone soon and I'll miss them so much.

a magical moment that moved me beyond words.....in the woods near Portland, OR - in a beautiful forest......my very best childhood friend and I found a little box of treasures. We giggled like schoolgirls as we looked at each little trinket then carefully put them all back in the tin box and left them on the forest floor for the next little girls to find.
