Stolen photos

September 9th, 2011
I'm not 100% sure but there appears to be photos in this weeks top 20 chart that were not taken by the supposed taker. I checked one out on google and it belongs to someone else. I believe there is a site you can go to to check these things out but of course I've forgotten it. If someone could do a double check that would be great.
@eyebrows - you know all there is to know, I'm sure you could work this out in a millisecond!
September 9th, 2011
tineye.com
September 9th, 2011
I found the one you are talking about. A simple google search brought up many copies of one of them.
September 9th, 2011
@scrivna Tagging Ross so he can look at this. One of them is entered in the theme for this week.
September 9th, 2011
@lolanae - there's actually two on this week's top 20
September 9th, 2011
@kjarn - Yup, I just found the other one. I had wondered.
September 9th, 2011
I went to see the top 20... pretty easy to spot.
September 9th, 2011
The latest tag challenge photo is a stolen one as well.
September 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones - I've been trying to use that tin eye but computer illiterate me can't get it to work. I went to her page and it appears that most if not all her photos are not really hers.
September 9th, 2011
@scrivna - please look into this.
September 9th, 2011
@kjarn - I got tinyeye to work. And that's how I also checked her tag challenge shot.
September 9th, 2011
@lolanae - how do you put an image into tin eye for it to check it?
September 9th, 2011
Right-click on an image and "copy image location" and paste that in the search thing
September 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones oh no... she's from my home town... the shame! the shame! LOL
September 9th, 2011
She's probably lying about that too @andycoleborn
September 9th, 2011
This is horrible. I don't even understand how people can do this sort of thing...
September 9th, 2011
A good bit of her shots aren't her's judging by tiny eye results.
September 9th, 2011
@indiannie_jones Nah.. it's a dodgy place so that's probably true hahaha
September 9th, 2011
@eliserose781 I was just saying that to my husband. I guess someone wants some attention?
September 9th, 2011
@andycoleborn rofl, s'ok, Andy... don't think any less of you :p
September 9th, 2011
@lolanae - oh no she won the latest tag challenge with a stolen photo!
@aspada - check this out!
September 10th, 2011
loads of her photos are stolen judging by the exif info. Its a shame they made the top twenty without getting spotted...
September 10th, 2011
Err, little help here, what photos are we talking about? I think I'm too naive to see it :-/
September 10th, 2011
@cazink - I've checked her out on tin eye and yep, most are stolen. Not only did she make the Top 20 twice this week but she also won the tag challenge!
September 10th, 2011
@Scrivna pencils and lightbulb
September 10th, 2011
@Scrivna - numbers 3 & 9 on Top 20 for this week.
September 10th, 2011
I had picked her out. A lot of different cameras as well as file names for the photos.
September 10th, 2011
@Scrivna go easy tho mate... she's from Pompey and might be a fan...not too many of us about lol....
September 10th, 2011
Good spot, I'll sort it in the morning, it's Friday night here and I've been down the pub! I'll put my serious head on tomorrow, hope you don't mind.
September 10th, 2011
@scooter - the only reason I checked her out was not through suspicion but because she was a new name and had scored two photos on the Top 20. I went to her page and like you, noticed a lot of different cameras and file names and .....the rest is history!
September 10th, 2011
@Scrivna - thanks Ross. I have left a few comments on her photos to make her aware that we are on to her.
September 10th, 2011
@kjarn You picked her out good, once I started going thru each photo, looked more and more wrong....I know everyone does not name photos the same, but just something was not right between the photo names and all the cameras. You have a good eye!!
September 10th, 2011
Oops! She's gone... disappointing tht someone feels the need to pollute this wonderful site, but I guess cheaters are everywhere so 365 is not immune. :(
September 10th, 2011
@kjarn Good eye Kathy!
September 10th, 2011
@marilyn Oops, well, that did not take long.
September 10th, 2011
@Scrivna - she has removed herself.
September 10th, 2011
Stolen name, too. Unless she really was the tennis player from Cornwall. Now that would be funny.
September 10th, 2011
it makes no sense to me, how can posting photos that you didnt photograph and being ranked in a top 20, really make you feel good? i mean you didnt earn it in ANY way...
some people...
September 10th, 2011
I've just read through this thread and am shocked that anyone would do this. I guess I'm naive....!! I wish I knew who it was...!!
September 10th, 2011
@brandywalker365 --- It's makes someone feel good because people are ooohhhing and ahhhing over the photo. It doesn't matter they didn't take it. What matters is people are talking about how good the photo is which makes her look good as a photographer. Real or not, it's all about the attention.
September 10th, 2011
@kimmiesue --- Well, it's time to stop being naive. People lie, cheat, steal, and do so many more worse things everywhere. There is no where this isn't true, even here. It's why there will never be peace in this world and why we need police.
September 10th, 2011
You know what is sad, I takes a lot of time to take photos (at least for me), post, but more importantly look at all the other wonderful work here by all of you! It takes time, and when someone intentionally deceives, it makes me sad. There are so many good photographers here that deserve to have other peoples' time. I just have a hard time believing someone did this. :(
September 10th, 2011
I have noted that a lot of folks label photos with their name: is this of any help to prevent the stealing of photos? I would think not, but it would make it more difficult to do, I suppose. I have noted also that some of the apparent professionals upload markedly downsized photos, so that if they are stolen they are of not much use due to their miniscule size [in KB instead of MB]. However, it is annoying to the rest of us because one cannot really see the detail normally present in a good photo. I suppose this is what we are going to see much more often due to this situation, however.
September 10th, 2011
Cat
@Scrivna maybe we should start leaving the people up that are stealing? I mean if you delete their account they just create another one right? If we leave them up then we are aware as a community that anything from them is most likely stolen, at least to a degree? Just maybe delete their picture and replace it with a "photo taken down due to THIEVERY"? :) Oooh the Scarlet letter of 365 "T" :)
September 10th, 2011
@kjarn i'm so curious - - what made you think to look? this whole thing blows my mind. obviously it's not the first nor last time it'll happen. but I wondered what was the red flag for you (if you don't mind my asking)?
September 10th, 2011
@stepheesue - I don't mind you asking at all. I check out the Top 20 each week and often click on the photos I like to check out their other work. Quite often its either the same people featured or at least people I've heard of so I was very surprised to see a new name with 2 photos in the top 10 and remembered she had won the Tag Challenge this week too. I went to her page to check out all these amazing photos of hers only to find an irregular mix of styles, lots of different cameras used, lack of exif info and I started to be suspicious. The rest is history.
September 10th, 2011
Kathy you should be an investigator. I had to stop and think about this. At first, I said whats the big deal. Then, second thought was walk a mile in the thieves shoes. Then I thought, this person wants attention, a good name,etc. Then I put me in the shoes of the stolen picture , and ask how would I feel if one of my pictures , got an award , and the photographer taking credit for it was a fake. Pissed. Disappointed that we all can't just be happy and decent to each other, its really disrespectful. Thanks Kathy to you and the others for helping to resolve this issue.
September 10th, 2011
and I was jealous she was so new to the project, was only a year older than me, and had 2 pictures in the top 10 already!

my self esteem has bounded back.

September 10th, 2011
That is crazy, I agree how does anyone get enjoyment from this. I tried looking at the top 20 for the stolen pic, is there anyway to still look for her pictures, or is everything just gone now?
September 10th, 2011
Ok I figured out which pics were the stolen ones, and did notice her page is definitely gone. Great job on catching her! Don't think I would have even picked up on that.
September 10th, 2011
Great job on picking up on it, I can't believe I commented on how good her work was....DUH...!!!
September 10th, 2011
i think i started following her...well, i've always lacked a bit of common sense :)

what a cheek she had, i hope she gets bad karma for this one!
September 10th, 2011
@enfys
Bad karma? She was 14, cut her a break.
September 10th, 2011
i wood be honoured and humbled if someone took the time to steal one of my photos.....right now five facebook friends 'borrowed' one of my photos as a profile pic :) very humbling
September 10th, 2011
@mej2011 - to be fair i didn't know she was 14, but at 14 i think i knew better than to steal another person's photo just to pass it off as my own. it's theft.

and my bad karma thing was meant to be tongue in cheek...maybe i should've done one of those :P things...
September 10th, 2011
@enfys
In no way am I saying that she was right, I'm just saying that she was young and has a lot of growing up to do still. Sorry, I did not understand your humor.
September 10th, 2011
@enfys - absolutely. We have no real knowledge about the age of this person but even if she is 14, that's certainly no excuse.
September 10th, 2011
Theft is theft and 14 is def old enough to know better!
September 10th, 2011
a 14 year old tennis player from Cornwall stealing photos and winning accolades? ... What is the world coming to?
September 10th, 2011
@enfys @mej2011 @jools -she is 14 which is plenty old enough to know right from wrong. During my time here on 365 there have been kids who have joined and 'stolen' photos from the net to add to their 365 project - ignorance and/or immaturity may have played a part but this girl was entering challenges and themes where the rules are clearly posted. As soon as it was pointed out to her that she wasn't doing the right thing she closed her account.
September 10th, 2011
@mej2011 She was a liar. My 14 year old wouldn't do that. She was very descriptive about how she created the photos. Blatant plagiarism. I would get kicked out of school for it. Welcome to life.
September 10th, 2011
I have come across two other accounts on 365 that use photos that are absolutely 'borrowed' (ie iStock & Flicker). I was just not sure what to do about it at the time, apart from deciding not to click 'follow'.
September 10th, 2011
@ltodd - they need to be reported and removed.
September 10th, 2011
Goddamnit why didn't I get a notification about this? Gah!
September 10th, 2011
@eyebrows - if you go right up to the top and read my initial post I think you'll find you did!
September 10th, 2011
I followed her too but was not suspect at all, well done on noticing!
September 10th, 2011
That's funny, because when I saw that lightbulb photo and the caption ,some part of my brain went "that's weird" because that looked like a tricky shot to set up and she had been really flippant about it. Now I know why!
September 10th, 2011
@kjarn that's what I mean - there's a mention of me but I got no notification :( Strange :(

Oh, unless, if you added my name in an edit - edits don't generate notifications.
September 10th, 2011
@eyebrows - I did indeed add you as an edit - as soon as I pressed 'start topic' I thought of you so quickly edited the post. Another thing I've learnt today.

Anyway we managed to work it out without you and the young lass is gone.
September 10th, 2011
Theft is theft at any age. And her profile said sixteen, not fourteen.
September 10th, 2011
She lied about the pics, she probably lied about her age too... She's probably a 50 yr old 'he' who has tried and failed to be any good at photography and so has resorted to this!!!
September 10th, 2011
LOL, ive just read this thread after a friend told me to have a look because she couldnt believe it. SO we have a 14, 16 OR possibly a 50 year old that is a she but could be a he, thats stolen pictures and has since deleted her account/been removed, add to that a good dose of bad karma, public hanging and immediate arrest :) coupled with a good dose of cyber bullying and the matter is settled.. Did you ever consider that he/she may be a member of Al-Qaeda sent to infiltrate 365 in an attempt to brain wash us all ? WOW just WOW..Anyone a Daily Mail reader?
September 10th, 2011
@tori3012 - now that's funny!
September 10th, 2011
@kjarn Im 14 and I know well enough not to steal! Thats's Just Wrong, Why would anybody do that? If she had enough effort to make a account why not make the effort to Take you own photos like I do and Everybody else does?! It Doesent Make Sence!!! x
September 10th, 2011
@tori3012 - Ha I'm laughing at yours now! Too funny....!
September 10th, 2011
A 50 year old tennis playing transvestite Al-Quieda agent surely would have more interesting photo's of their own?
September 10th, 2011
i just find it sad when someone misses the point of 365. :(

documenting your life, working on your skillset, creating amazing photos - they are all interwoven, and yet can all stand on their own merit.

photography is a passion, not something to prove how cool you are... that some people feel the need to "cheat" and be other than who they actually are as a photographer - it just seems nonsensical to me. not to mention morally and ethically wrong.
September 10th, 2011
Wow, that sucks!
September 10th, 2011
@tolpol I like the tennis playing transvestite Al-Quieda angle, it adds a colourful perspective to this threads theory dont you think? I wish i would have thought of that :o)
September 10th, 2011
@tolpol - HA!!!
September 10th, 2011
@eyebrows @kjarn @Scrivna
RE- notifications...

I've learnt and have told others about when I've noticed it...
if you tag someone in the thread opening piece (as Kathy did here) or in the captioning of your image - they will not get a notification about it... it's only in the commenting section below those two sections that notifications will result from...
also, when tagging someone you need to leave a 'space' on either side of the tag for it to register with the notifications... often people put - or : striaght after the tag making it redundant...

just something I have picked up on, hope it helps.
September 10th, 2011
@kjarn hey kathey, people don't get notifications if you tag them in your original post or photo descriptions, you have to tag them in a "comment" for them to know about it :))
September 10th, 2011
Seriously, I know it's not what 365 is about but 99.99999% of people are legit and take better photos than the stolen ones so really the only people these thiefs are fooling are themselves. Don't let a negative affect what is such an amazing site - lets just take better pics!!!
September 10th, 2011
@kjarn @eyebrows To get notification I have found that I have to post my discussion, and then put @fillintheblank in the comment section. No commas, periods, or punctuation can touch the name without a space in between because then it would be a different @
September 10th, 2011
@wadey @taidster thank you for that girls, I never knew that about notifications. I've always put a - after the tag and I've often wondered why some people tag others in a second comment. Even though it makes no sense, it's all becoming clearer now.

Why is this so @Scrivna
September 10th, 2011
@brumbe Thanks Paula - gee it feels weird not putting a dash after your tag as I have done for the last 11 months and now I'm thinking about all those comments I've written that others have missed out on getting notified about :-)
September 10th, 2011
@eyebrows @kjarn I'm pretty sure this is another one in the top 20 that's stolen.

September 10th, 2011
@sdpace Ha ha - most definitely!
September 10th, 2011
Good work, Kathy! I love that you caught her... :)

Just started a new discussion about the future of Tag Challenge VIII because of course I have claimed the results as invalid at this point!
September 10th, 2011
yikes! a cheater once again? and in the top 20? holy guacamole! what is going on here?
September 10th, 2011
@tori3012 , hehe.......love your thoughts:)
September 10th, 2011
@sdpace
Indeed, however, this is not school. This is a website for people to have fun with photography. It seems as if maybe the FUN aspect as been lost. Again, I didn't say I agreed with what she did. All I'm saying is that at 14, she's still young and learning and maturing. Posting a photo on a website and claiming you took it, not the end of the world.
September 10th, 2011
Goodness! I'm really shocked at this. Doing this Project is certainly not easy (at least for me) and trying to get a different snap each day is a major challenge but enjoyable. Why fool yourself?
Well spotted Kathy A!!
September 10th, 2011
@wadey thanks, i'll take a look at that!
September 10th, 2011
Fabulous catch, Kathy! I've worried about people stealing my photos and using them other places, but haven't had the time to figure out how to do a watermark yet. Funny that it never occured to me that someone would steal a photo and post it HERE, since the whole point of this project is to actually take a photo (or 100) every day.
September 10th, 2011
she;s had her account removed - the images should be removed from the top 20 chart really
September 10th, 2011
LOL and that tag-challenge was the first time I was nominated for a challenge!
Well not the winner but my own picture, must feel better than winning with something stolen.
September 10th, 2011
I'm speechless.....
September 10th, 2011
I am soooo disappointed to hear about this. However, it doesn't change the way I feel about "365", the wonderful friends I've made, and their sensational work. The piracy thing absolutely sucks, but, "one bad apple....." Hey, I just figure : "steal, and you shall be stolen from." They'll get theirs. Just keep motivated and continue to take those pictures that you are proud of, and that we are fortunate enough to see because you shared them. Be well, Les
September 10th, 2011
@sdpace hahahahahaha!!!!! :)))
September 10th, 2011
@kmrtn6 I agree all her entries should be removed too. She removed herself about 20 minutes after I alerted her that we were on to her.
September 10th, 2011
@maaikel Now you are the winner and with a genuine photo. Congratulations to you.
September 11th, 2011
@maaikel - you can sleep well knowing that your photo is legit...
September 11th, 2011
Why would anyone do this? Congrats to any real winners!!!!!! Shame on you phonies!!!
September 11th, 2011
@kmrtn6 I agree.
September 11th, 2011
Wow, crazy to me that someone would feel the need to be praised so much, that they would make a 365 account and steal other peoples work. Good eye on catching it!
September 11th, 2011
@sunnygreenwood :) Yes, I was just kidding. I have the pleasure of meeting some of those fabulous folks next weekend!
September 11th, 2011
I'm glad nobody has caught on to me yet... oh wait.. I've never made Top 20
September 11th, 2011
@keithdavid WE'RE ON TO YOU
September 11th, 2011
@sunnygreenwood @sdpace I was wondering if anyone was going to take that seriously - too funny.
September 11th, 2011
Wow... great eye... :D I never would have scrutinized it that much... so, I have to hand it to you. :) It's quite puzzling to get a "high" out of getting the "awesome shot" and "great pic" when deep inside, you know it is not yours... wow! :D

Talk about 15 mins of popularity... :D

Well, at least she learned not to do that in an early stage of her teens... Who knows, if she wasn't caught, she might try it to other things other than pictures... :)
September 11th, 2011
@kjarn Goodness. Quite shocked that someone would do that! Well done you for catching it-what a sleuth!
September 11th, 2011
I was following her as well I was amazed at the quality of he work and of course green with envy!
I do have to say though that this sort of thing happens all the time on Deviant Art another site were photos are posted. My daughter complains about it all the time and it's just something they look out for & in fact they have regular users who are promoted to moderators to look out for and report on a regular basis. I guess it's something that we will all now have to be vigilant about now that 365 has been 'discovered'...
September 11th, 2011
@bobfoto LOL Yeah thank you Bob!
September 11th, 2011
@kjarn Thank you ! I slept well indeed.
September 11th, 2011
@maaikel - well i voted for you on it
September 11th, 2011
I find this absolutely lame to steel someone's pic ....and for what ?! to hear 5-8 times how great you are ?! get a life + a camera and get out there !
September 11th, 2011
@crisd - she got out really quick once I was on to her!
September 11th, 2011
@kjarn well done ! really this is such a childish thing to do ....I'm here to learn so I really cant understand this kind of people !
September 11th, 2011
@justindereniws A few of my friends have used pics of mine for their facebook profiles, and that is an honour. It is not deceitful though. I would be angry if someone stole my pics and took the credit for the work that went into them.

I am happy for them to be used in whatever way if permission is requested first. :)
September 11th, 2011
@mej2011 At 14 she seems to have learned a lot about being deceitful. I am many years older than her and know none of what she has done.

I agree with this comment, and was about to post in the same vein:
"Well, at least she learned not to do that in an early stage of her teens... Who knows, if she wasn't caught, she might try it to other things other than pictures... :) "
I hope she has learend her lesson.
If she really wants the kudos she should get out there and learn the thrill of taking amazing pictures, and the rightful credit.
September 11th, 2011
It's absolutely beyond me why anyone would do that? What's a credit worth if you know in your heart you don't derserve it because it's not for your own work? I would feel so bad!
September 11th, 2011
WOW! I missed a lot while being gone this weekend! Glad it was solved
September 12th, 2011
CK
What bizarre behaviour, and well done @kjarn for the detective work. On a lighter note I long for the day someone wants to steal one of mine.
September 12th, 2011
@clarek I only dream of taking photos that are that good too :-)
September 12th, 2011
'wacky world web' ... sad but true these things will happen,
Why ? who knows, personally i could not be bothered, ripping someones images from another site, much rather have 'two comments' ..'one comment' .. 'NO comments' & know 100% its mine!! than get 100s of comments and a top ten spot on a stolen image, anyday of the week..
The few times i have managed the pop page makes my day. Never been good enough to hit the blog top ten.. one day perhaps, but it will be mine if i do , but then your in danger of being stolen yourself , .. trust me i know.. (o;
September 12th, 2011
Just curious, since I'm really new here, there may already be something, but it would be cool to have a thread where you could link pictures that you find published somewhere that are really interesting, and you just want to share the link without trying to claim they are yours, like "look what I am amazed by in this shot!"
September 12th, 2011
Bev
@scooter I agree with you.

I take TONS of pictures (over 100 a day sometimes) and sort and weed out until I find the one that grabs me the most, hoping that it will snag others' eyes and get possible feedback. It's people like that (who steal photos and use them) that make it hard for people like us (the honest ones) to get any kind of credit. And people like that also ruin the credibility of legitimate photographers. I know that stealing and other sins are a fact of life, but thankfully I am not among any of them. I take my pictures and post them no matter how good or awful they are. Even if I've taken only one photo . . . I use it. I've only made the Top 10 and Pop Page once in my time here and I'm in my 2nd year now and still have only made it that one time, so for someone new to make it not once, but twice, plus win the challenge, is highly suspect. Kudos to @kjarn for catching this! WTG! I knew I followed you for a reason ... well, other then the fact that I like your pictures! :)
September 12th, 2011
Bev
@kjarn Great catch there, lady! You should get an award from Ross!
September 12th, 2011
@redkite Two of my coworkers also use my picture for their FB pictures, and I'm fine with that. It feels good to know someone enjoys your work so much. I agree, also, with getting angry over theft.
