Looking for something slightly different than the word a day challenge? Some of us have decided to go for a week by week challenge this May. You're welcome to join us! Here's the layout:
May 1-5: Color
May 6-12: Black and white or monochrome
May 13-19: Same subject
May 20-26: Abstract or minimal
May 27-31: Focus or macro
You are allowed one wild card per week and you cannot repeat a wild card once it's been used. Wildcards can be used in any order, but remember, only once.
1) Inspired by: here's your chance to pay the highest form of flattery and copy a shot of another photographer that you admired or fav'd
2) Low light or unique use of light
3) Anything beginning with the letter M
4) SOOC
5) Street shot.
@olivetreeann, I think I'm in...not done one of these yet !! stupid questions time - so I just tag the photo as you say above and that's it ? Or do I have to post it somewhere ?? Do all the photos I take during each week have to follow the same theme ? - eg all the photos are to do with "colour" the first week?
Like Sharon, I have a lot of questions as well. What is a wildcard and how does that tie in with the first set of ideas, or is that if you use 2 albums?
@sharonaddison Oh no- not dumb questions at all! Yes, you can tag all the photos with 5wksinmay on your album page and leave it at that if you want. You can also copy and paste them into this discussion thread so that anyone can look at them here. You can also add additional tags if the picture falls into more than one category. For example, you might shoot a red fire truck. In that case you can use the challenge tag, a "firetruck" tag, "red" and whatever else you might think appropriate. Yes, all the photos on the first week will feature color (the subject might change, but the main point is to shoot in color and that color be featured somehow). The second week b/w or monochrome (like sepia), etc. Feel free to ask more if you need to- sometimes when you're writing up these challenges it's clear in your head but when others read it, it's not as clear as you thought!
and SOOC is Straight Out Of Camera, meaning you get what you get when your camera processes the image. It's meant to challenge your photography skills by forcing you to get the white balance, focus, aperture, ISO all correct before you take the shot. No post processing allowed!
That is great thanks. Some of the images for the minimalism look to be similar to the one I did for the breaking the rules - white space challenge. Also the SOOC one I would mostly do that anyway without realising it especially when I use film as I don't process it I just scan and save it using a different name. Thank you for explaining everything.
@lesphoto Thanks for joining in Leslie- you can mix it up if you want, or if you want to shoot just one color that's fine too. I'm going to mix it up if that helps.
@shadesofgrey Thanks for doing an excellent job of answering those questions Shades of Grey! I've been on the run all day and just got back to 365. This community is great!
@cimes1 A wildcard is a shot you can substitute if you don't get a shot of the week's challenge. For example, let's say I did not get a color shot on May 3rd, but I happened to be taking a walk in downtown Stroudsburg and captured a street vendor selling hot dogs. I could substitute the "street shot" for a "color shot" on that day. There are 5 wildcards- one for each week but they are not assigned to any particular week so that you can use them when you want to- but you don't have to use them at all if you don't need to. As far as albums go you can post this in your main album or you can post them in an extra album- it's up to you. I will be posting mine in my main album. Does that help Carole? Sometimes when you type out an answer here it seems to make sense until someone else reads it!
@digitalrn It's a photo a day with the same theme all week. Of course two of the weeks are short, but it's going to be a lot of fun I think! @samanthamphoto Looking forward to it Samantha! I've got to post mine before I forget!! @alia_801 Thanks Alia- you get 50% of the credit for your great ideas too! @pandorasecho Go for it Dixie!! I want to "hear" lots of laughter coming from your color shots! @nicolecampbell Thanks Nicole- you really can't lose with color can you? It's everywhere! lol @sharonaddison Very colorful Sharon! You and I were on the same color wavelength!
@samanthamphoto To post your picture on this discussion thread highlight the info in the share box to the left of your photo. In the pull down menu, right click "copy". Return to the discussion thread and go to the post comment box and in the pull down menu right click "paste". The info on your picture will pop into the box and when you click on post comment, the picture will appear.
Well, we had the rain today, so had to come up with some cheerful and colorful flowers to brighten the day. I share them with you Ann. Can't wait to see what you come up with :-)
I'm not sure that I like the monochrome/Black & white but I am noticing that it makes different parts of the picture become the main focus if you are looking at shapes and textures instead of colors first
@sandier Sorry for the delay in answering Sandy- I've been out of town and not had a computer handy. The tag is 5wksinmay. That works for pulling up all the photos entered into this "discussion". If you want the picture to appear here go to the page where your picture is displayed in your project. Highlight the info in the "share" box to the right of your photo. Left click your mouse for the pull down menu, then right click "copy". Return to this discussion page and go to the "post comment" box at the bottom of the discussion. Left click for the menu, right click on "paste". The photo info will then appear. When you click "post comment" the picture will appear.
@pandorasecho I think you chose a strong subject for the b/w and it looks great. I find that alternating b/w and color shots actually strengthens my ability to see a good shot in both genres. It's good to stretch your boundaries by trying a different type of shot every once in a while!
@pandorasecho I like it, very old and vintage. I'm in hopes to get an old car shot for this weeks challenge. I really do like b&w photos and I agree it puts the focus on other things :-)
@vposey I'm so glad you're enjoying it. I've been taking pictures but haven't had the ability to upload. I'm on a brief stopover at home and I'm going to try to upload my missing pictures before I leave again tomorrow! I really like the use of the reflection on this one. Very pretty!
@boogie Hi Mags- sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you! Traditionally the "same subject" shots are one item photographed seven different ways throughout the week. I did this last December (but I can't remember which album I posted it in- my 365 or my second album) when I did a seven day theme around the festival of Hanukkah and shot the menorah seven different ways. But I think you could also come up with a couple variations on this if you're the creative type, so feel free to do that if you want. But the simplest form is to take one thing and approach it in seven different ways.
@tklein I'll just post one comment on all your shots to save time Tina- you've taken some wonderful color shots and the black and whites are excellent!!
my first for "the same"---sorry, but you will be bombarded with dog pictures. :) It's my favorite subject, and full of endless possibilities for this week.
@pandorasecho Cool idea Dixie! I will be on and off in my ability to view- but I will catch up after all the activity around Dad dies down. Sounds like it's going to be a great series.
and all others in the challenge. My apologies for the result of some things that are beyond my control- that is the fact that I will probably fall behind posting my photos on this thread and in viewing yours. My father passed away Monday and we are in the processing of taking care of the funeral arrangement etc. I so appreciate your enthusiasm and pictures. Keep up the good posting while I'm gone and happy shooting!
Anne I am so sorry. Of course you need to take care of you and family needs now. It has been since 1997 when my dad died but I still remember the intensity of that time. Hugs and prayers.
Using one of the mullignas here- it actually qualifies for 2 of the different categories--"Anything M- Mike Napoli", and SOOC. I did do a really cheesy photoshop job of one of my dogs at the baseball field, but it was extremely cheesy! And, I really liked this one.
@archaeofrog@swamppoodle@vposey Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers and well-wishes! I really wanted to be so much more involved in this challenge- but life went otherwise. I'm enjoying the pictures though- even though I don't always comment! Keep the pictures coming- they're fun and uplifting- just what I need these days!
@pandorasecho@salza Thank you Dixie and Sally. I really appreciate your condolences and encouragement. I'm very thankful for the 365 community. You are the best!!
@boogie Thank you Mags. The 365 community has been a great support to me these days as most of my "hometown" friends cannot be here. But the internet connects us all around the world and I've been really encouraged by everyone's thoughts and sympathy.
Abstract. I looked up the Wikipedia definition and liked one point, anything that differs from the original in some aspect so every two dimensional portrayal is somewhat abstract. I can do that.
@vposey This would look interesting as a clock. I'd make the hands and numbers red or something bold so that they would stand out against the black and white keys. You really did an excellent job processing this one!
@la_photographic Alia picked out focus and I think she meant trying different ways of focusing- i.e. dof. She may have also been thinking of playing with focus- such as making something deliberately out of focus- in a shot. I added macro for those of us who might want a specific kind of focus to repeat throughout the week. Any or all are up for grabs. Hope that helps.
@pandorasecho Abstracts can go in so many directions- color is one of them. And that's the beauty of it- an abstract has endless possibilities- both in the way you produce it and interpret it.
@salza Nice shot! I took one like this many years ago (when I used my 35mm SLR all the time and my sons were young!!) and it's still one of my favorites. I'm going to find that and scan it into my computer now! It'd make a great filler someday! The chair shot is nice too- love the way the light is playing off the metal on that one!
@olivetreeann It has been so inlightening doing this challenge, forced me to look outside the box! Thanks so much for starting it and for NOT including street photography! Although maybe I should set myself that challenge as I do not like doing street / people shots!
@salza thank you Sally! A street shot was an option but I'm not crazy about them either. And so far, it doesn't look like I may use any of those wild cards so it will remain on the shelf (so to speak). Someone posted a June word challenge, but I'm not crazy about all the words on the list and there's only 15 of them in total. So, I'm thinking about making up another one myself. I liked this weekly format- so time to brainstorm. If you have any ideas- let me know!
@olivetreeann I have really enjoyed this challenge, even though I jumped in late, and used several alternates. :) I hope you do another one, although I have zero ideas! I can't believe it's almost over!
@olivetreeann Any plans for a challenge for next month? I haven't managed to think of anything yet... I've been considering another word-book challenge - the last one was fun :) Let me know if you come up with anything - only 1 day of May left for me!
@alia_801 I was noodling around with an idea yesterday. I've liked this weekly format and was thinking about a "back to basics" week by week and had collected a bunch of ideas about composition. I was also thinking about something called "Jump into June" but hadn't come up with something other than J words. I'm hoping to be inspired today!
@olivetreeann Have also been wondering about ideas re a weekly theme and have only come up with mechanical or industrial. I have been trying to think of something that can be interpreted in many ways and not be to resticting.
The abstract week got me thinking it would be fun to do a week about seeing things in other things, dinosaurs in the clouds, kittens in the foam on a mocha, faces in the bark on a tree.
@swamppoodle Awww- look at those eyes!! @salza Great macro Sally! I love the tones of the b/w. @vposey Beautiful shot Vickie! I know the temptation with flowers is to shoot them in color but your choice of b/w here was great! @pandorasecho That is an interesting thought Dixie. I don't know if I could pull off a week of them, but it certainly would be a great wildcard. Then again, they are called "challenges"!
@salza Thanks Sally- that sounds interesting. I'm going to mull that one over, incorporate it somehow and post something either later tonight, or tomorrow. Thanks for getting the wheels turning!
Eep! I hope the new challenge appears soon! It's almost tomorrow here and I don't know what I have to point the camera at yet! :) (No pressure...) heheh!
@alia_801 I did come up with something and posted it this morning (which is tonight where you are! I think!) Any way I gave you a shout out with it, but just in case- it's called 30 days in June. I set it up with daily challenges that go from week to week. I incorporated Sally and Dixie's suggestions from above. I hope it makes sense! I wanted to post it last night, but when I went to do it, the site froze and then "went off the air" for maintenance! So I hope you've seen it because I CAN'T TAKE THE GUILT OF DISAPPOINTING YOU!!!!! lol

@sharonaddison Very colorful Sharon! You and I were on the same color wavelength!
@wenbow So glad you're joining us Wendy! Gold is an excellent color!
.
@sharonaddison I see some green and yellow in there too!
I had trouble getting out of my box today and didn't post this processed photo of my art project, but still wanted to share. :-)
@1invisiblegrl fantastic shot!!!
@realrown This is beautiful.
@sharonaddison This one reminds me of the story of the ugly duckling! Good catch.
Sorry, I forgot to post on here yesterday. :-)
I really like all the photos, I'm seeing. Very nice work! :-)
Thanks Ann for the challenge, it's been fun this week. :-)
Uploading late tonight. Can't wait to view everyone's photos tomorrow :-)
@vposey Nice shot Vickie!
@archaeofrog Beautiful study!
@vposey Thanks Vickie!
I have enjoyed this 'enforced' use of B&W - it's not something I have used very often!
@olivetreeann I just love the water drop shots!
Wild card, letter M for Madison

@vposey What a fun series!
Some are looking pretty wildly weak here, day five, but then again a new open just opened, so I might squeak through the week!
I noticed today, I got some of my theme weeks off. Oh well, it happens. I'll be back on track tomorrow lol :-)
First "abstract"
@swamppoodle @vposey @wenbow @pandorasecho @archaeofrog @boogie @sharonaddison @salza @miley89 @1invisiblegrl @tklein @realrown @groovygirlrn
Amazingly they just lasted the week. :)
Here is my view through a glass block in a Burger King
My take on focus
@salza Great macro Sally! I love the tones of the b/w.
@vposey Beautiful shot Vickie! I know the temptation with flowers is to shoot them in color but your choice of b/w here was great!
