I see many people want more followers, feedback and criticism. It's been said before, but the only way to get all that is to follow people and give comments by the butload. It will be lopsided at first, but eventually you find a number of people who respond you on a regular basis,
There is some fabulous advice from the 80's band Missing Persons:
@vase I am a newbie this year, and you're spot on with this. I definitely have picked up followers by commenting on people's pictures and the discussion threads. It's too bad this info isn't automatically offered at the time of registration.
@vase thanks, I'm only new but hate the forum filled up with this topic. I have made followers like @l2lumom said by making comments and also by following images that I like get's me followers.
Even voting and submitting in the weekly challengers can get you followers.
Very true- with lots of followers to keep track of the only way I can stay on top of their photos is when they comment on mine- I click on their icon and it takes me right to the latest shot so I can return the favor.
@burghgirl@sugarmuser@lisjam1@l2lumom@lrn@olivetreeann thanks for listening to my mini rant. I'm not the super giver on this site -- just noticing and sharing what I've learned here.. @l2lumom good idea about having info at the time of registration
Great post, Carla! I don't know if all the follower hounds are aware but the more followers the less likely you will appear on the PP or other desired hot spots! Just enjoy the community and don't worry about status!
I am afraid so many people think this is another Instagram. I think it will settle down soon. I joined in the middle of the year and had not seen a follow me post until this month.
@sunshinephoto5@orangecrush@vase i was just thinking that i don't recall this happening at the beginning of last year... i really love the community of 365 and our shared passion for the art and craft of photography... love being able to share ideas, gain insight and the opportunity to learn so much... and i would so much prefer it if it didn't somehow become all about popularity
It took me a while to realise this. I think during the first month I did not even follow anymore or start commenting till my second month. Made the experience andlearning curve so much better when I did
I joined in April and never once directly asked for followers. I just commented and followed others and hoped that people would do the same. I'll admit it was a little discouraging to only get a couple of comments and have so few followers in the beginning but I found the more I wrote about other people's stuff, the more people hit that "follow" button and came over to my profile. I now have over 500 followers and I'm rather proud of that unsolicited number.
@orangecrush Your comment about more followers means less likely to make the PP is an interesting one. I used to be on the PP once or twice a week but things have slowed down dramatically. I was starting to get a complex!! Ha Ha. I wonder if my recent influx of new followers is part of the cause. Either that or my shots are just crap these days!! Your advice to "enjoy the community" is a very good one!! I love it here!!
@orangecrush@monaalta yes @sunshinephoto5 and I hope so. @northy that's what I was thinking because I had another account at the beginning of last year and I don't remember all this. I just joined bunch of groups on Flickr and I don't see a single soul starting a thread that is "Oh hi, look at me." but maybe that is the culture on other sites like Instagram @brav you were in your shell nice and peaceful, and then you came out as it were, without a lot of fanfare and garlands. That's how it should be.
Now I'm off to take a klonopin and to sleep.
@brav@kwind@vase@northy@orangecrush I really joined this site as a way of keeping my 365 project going. The wonderful talented people here and the challenges and learning are a fantastic bonus I had not anticipated, making my time spent here truly worthwhile
I joined at the beginning of last year and don't remember people asking for followers at all. It took me ages to work out all the aspects of 365, I started by just looking at most recently posted - didn't even realise there was a popular page for ages, which is probably a good thing - would have been so intimidated!! I guess a lot of people start at the beginning of the year and things will quieten down a bit, the serious ones will stay and the ones just here for followers will stop posting - as we all know, posting every day isn't as easy as it sounds!
@vase great post and bring back the 80's. There have been far too many threads lately asking for followers, announcing fav's and/or I'll show you mine if you show me yours threads. Sometimes, understandably we might want to celebrate a milestone or a great photo of our own, but I think it is important to celebrate the photos of others we enjoy. @orangecrush I remember you did a great thread on the 2000th (?) photo you had faved and asked others to post a milestone number fav of another person. You should do it again sometime. There was also a great game of picking a photo from the album of the previous person that had posted. I think it was called Browse and Pick @swilde I would like to see more of these threads which encourage community @northy you do a great job encouraging community with get-pushed
@peterdegraaff There was a Browse and Pick just last week Peter. It's always one of my favourites because it encourages you to look at people you might not otherwise come across.
I dont know if the newbies are looking at this discussion because they may not think the headline applys to them..... maybe change the title to 'want more followers, comments and fav's?..... look here!!!!
@monika64@vase@northy Good idea to maybe change the name of this thread so the newbies are more likely to see it. I think maybe it's become a bit of a craze because one or two people did it and others think that's the way to go. @peterdegraaff Agree that a lot of threads are being 'smothered'. No sooner does a new B&P get started than it 'disappears'. It's probably a result of there being so much more activity on this site than there was a few years ago.
Oh goodness, this was totally me! Thank you for this thread - when I first joined, all I knew was that I wanted tips and people to talk to and give me pointers, so I started one of the aforementioned threads :) I will try to comment more, and follow lots of people instead!
Thank you for starting this thread! i always love to snoop around the latest images and comment on the ones i like, also on a lot of newbies. Then a lot of the newbies decide to follow me, which i have no problem with, but then they never comment on any of my photos, so why do you follow me then?!
@vase@orangecrush@kwind@peterdegraaff@northy Interesting comment, Jerry!!! I have thought the same re: my shots, that maybe I was now missing something I previously had etc and thought that perhaps my shots are just more crap now lol ... mind you, Peter you have a permanent spot, I'm sure lol.
@kwind@orangecrush The irony of the Popular Page is if you're fairly new at photography, you make the PP more often early in your project, but far less often later when you've finally gotten the hang of taking a decent photo! I cringe at a few of mine that actually made it.
@orangecrush@lisjam1 methinks I am being dim but could you elaborate on the more followers = less likely to appear on PP ?
I assumed (wrongly?) that more followers = more hits/comments = promoted to PP ?
Thanks
I really love a lot of the photos on here-- so it's difficult not to want to follow so many people; however, being new-- I decided only to follow as many that I can really view, enjoy, and comment on. I have really been enjoying the experience-- and I suggest others do the same before begging for followers-- everything forms in time.
Because the more followers, the higher percentage of them need to fav a shot. 10 followers, 2 fav's would be 20% faving, 100 followers and 2 fav's would only be 2%. Same for comments and views, the PP is a numbers game, alway's has been.
The begging posts did happen last year, but not as much as this year I think. It's a shame that threads can't be 'stickied' so that they don't get bounced off the front page - this would help keep the competition/participation/etc threads live. Also, there was a wonderful introduction to 365 written by either @jinximages or @eyebrows; if that could be stickied, or put as a link from the 'start new thread' page that would be great. @scrivna
@orangecrush@kwind@jase_h
Sorry, off the main topic, but the amount of followers really works against the chances to get on PP. Take Michael Elliott for example - plenty of times in top20, but hardly ever on PP. So we better just enjoy ourselves here. And come to think of it - we can't remove inactive followers, and those who have left the project ages ago... Or can we? But these followers, whose comments really make me think, are funny, well thought out - they really make me enjoy the project. Specially as I find myself stunned or speechless so often here :P
I also appreciate the weekly thread: your favourite FAV of someone else very much.
@peterdegraaff I was just looking back through the discussions and did searches, the last B&P (2013/2) was started 1/14, so by all intents and purposes B&P 2013/3 should've started 1/21 but no one ever posted it. Is there a proper protocol for doing it or can anyone get it started? and Do you start it with the last poster on the previous thread or pick a random profile?
I am just back after a short hiatus upon finishing my project and I feel I just HAVE to comment to this wonderful thread as well! I absolutely HATE that I can't even find the worthwhile discussions any more because of all the "follow me" stuff that's posted. I feel like my friend Kim @kwind - I joined and never once have asked for people to follow me. . .in fact I was "shy" and a bit unknowledgeable about how the whole thing worked for several months after joining the project last year and only got the hang of it all by reading and researching the discussion threads, searching through old ones, etc. I know for a fact that there was simply none of this going on last year in January, as I joined mid-month then and it took DIGGING to find the threads that encouraged following and commenting on others' albums. Maybe there should be a newbie discussion group that would simply segregate all of that from our continued interest in art, sharing and the disucssion threads that push us all to be better photographers!
I don't know how many of you noticed, but a lot of us who have been around for a year (or almost) jumped in and tried to issue advice, guidance, pointing out URL links to discussions that "taught" the best practices for using the site. . .but it certainly seemed to have the effect of spitting in the wind. Inelegant, yes, but oh, so true.
@sassik Thank you so much - I will continue to host the Favorite Fav of Someone else thread as long as I possibly can. I think it's one of the best things I can do to support this AWESOME community! (the only drawback at all is that I simply HAD to turn off email notifications - even having the mail automated to go to a special folder, the notifications simply hosed my mail system over and over!).
@ayrinthelife Rachael, thank you SO much for your careful response and for understanding exactly where we are all coming from. That took a boatload of courage to step up, my dear. Bravo!
I've only been here since Jan 1 this year... but I find the 'please follow me' threads as annoying as the old hands. I totally agree with Carla's sentiment... if you want followers, then follow! And comment, critique... it's not rocket science, you get what you give. If you are an active part of this community, people will be more inclined to show interest in what you are doing. The attitude that success here is about the number of followers one has irks me - success is growing as a photographer and supporting others to grow, too. I tried this last year but soon faded away... that time I didn't bother to follow anyone and no one followed me, which didn't bother me, I just wanted to post my photos. This year I'm much more active in following others and - surprise! - people are more interested in looking and commenting on my stuff... which I am finding motivating and I can see myself sticking to it this year. I'm learning so much from looking at other's work and thinking about what makes an image effective, this feels like success rather than considering how many people are following me. Take part in the challenges, (I really recommend the 'Get Pushed', I'm learning heaps from this), follow people whose work interests and inspires you, be prepared to give feedback yourself... these are the things that have made my go at 365 a different and more positive experience from last time. But I suspect it's the converted that are reading this discussion, not the follower junkies.
I love the challenges, the community and the sharing of views through posts, threads and comments. I find threads asking for followers annoying and pointless and don't like them smothering the good stuff. Worrying too much about pp and followers tends to make people crazy and paranoid. Not the point of my project. I totally echo what others have said here- enjoy the project for itself, for photographic development and for the generous, diverse and passionate photog community who make up 365.
As a newbie i agree. I joined this site to share my pics and to see others pics as well as gain possibly some invaluable hints and tips along the way (and so far ive not been disappointed). Sometimes to me it smacks of self adulation, if thats the case then sorry i dont do begging nor boosting egos, i like pics because i like the picture, as simple as that! If those that i follow put a picture on that im not really keen on then i wont comment just for the sake of it, surely thats non conducive and can i also say that im terrified sometimes of commenting on those that i do like as i dont really know the 'lingo' and am so afraid of sounding really 'dumb' (though being a natural blonde it does come easy:-) .
as another newbie lots of these comments ring a bell with me, I wouldn't dream of saying "look at me". When I see some of the amazing photos out there I wonder whether I will ever have time/knowledge/ability to achieve similar results even in time. The buzz however when someone new notices a picture and says something, complimentary or helpful is just great!
I've never found such a positive and creative forum. Let's not spoil it!
This whole discussion topic has made me lol. And yes, I agree, the "follow me" topics get a little wearing. I suggest ignoring them and waiting for a new interesting topic to emerge. They always do! ;)
p.s. Has anybody ever posted a "please DON'T follow me" topic? I suppose I could just search, but I'm feeling lazy today, hah!
@allegresse out of curiosity I searched it :-), nope no one has posted that... I bet they would get a lot of views though, kind of like the don't look at this or don't smell this. Human nature makes it impossible not to....
@ozziehoffy@jase_h pretty sure T20 is favs, not views... and, not to start a whole 'nuther soap-box topic, but i'm a little ambivalent about the threads saying look at this picture that got a bazillion favs...
prolly i've been guilty of that myself, and prolly it says more about me being crabby than anything else... but to me it really emphasizes the popularity aspect that i just do not get into... i actually quite like the pp for the fact that it is showcasing some newbies' shots worth looking at that i might not otherwise have seen....
and frankly, lovely tho' it is to get lots of favs and be on the pp, in my mind, that doesn't hold a candle to getting handful of thoughtful comments or having some fun conversations... which isn't to say that i don't appreciate the views and quick comments that i get... i do... and i often end up giving them because there just isn't enough time in the day... but i so wish it could be more about photography and less about popularity and appealing to the masses...
@northy Great comment, especially the bit about the fun we have with some of the conversations that our shots produce. I love the ones that produce no favs but lots of funny and interesting to-and-fro between everybody that views the shots. That's when you get to know people on this site and understand where they're coming from.
@northy I do find newbies shots on the PP too, same as you, probably wouldn't see them otherwise.
I'm guilty of quick comments too. I just seriously don't have the time to get into too many lengthy discussions and then come back and have to read right through etc... ahhh the life with kids and homeschool lol.
It's not about popularity etc to me, but it does help affirm that perhaps I'm getting it right as far as my techniques, particularly in trying new things. That said, often then I get less lol. Then I wonder if I'm on the wrong track completely even though I like it. If I didnt' like it, then it wouldn't be uploaded.... anyway... not even sure if I'm addressing/responding to what you were saying or if I'm off track haha.
@northy totally agree with you, though I have posted on them too occasionally. Sadly there is a preoccupation with popularity and faving. Think I might start a failure Friday thread even though I don't have them! (An enantios aside) @ozziehoffy T20 is based on fav's from Wednesday to Wednesday. PP is on fav's and views but at a fairly low level.
I decide to follow people if I know I could get more inspirations from their work and obviously after checking their works.
So I follow people not because I wanted to be followed back. It applies for the comment as well. I made a comment because I liked to and to appreciating others' work.
Then I stand corrected :) Guess I am wrong sometimes ;) And as for fav's, I do use it as a bookmark as well, maybe to ask a question later, or a funny discussion, or maybe if a technique is described. Can't be the only one who does that?
@wildernesswillie Forgot to say that I'm always look at your work but definitely not always leave a comment. just to prevent me only saying 'nice', 'cool', 'brilliant', 'love it', even though I do most of the time... Keep on going mister!
@wildernesswillie I guess in your situation a like button might come in handy! A single word in a comment can be quite effective. Writing a paragraph is not a requirement. Added bonus to interacting is developing some great relationships. Best wishes!
@northy Nobody puts Northy in a corner - sorry couldn't resist. I agree with you wholeheartedly. After a hiatus around the holidays, I was on the fence about coming back because this site can take so much time. What tipped the balance for me was Jerry Plume's One Night Stand 3 challenge (so much fun) and a 365 friend from my first year (Paula Wallis) rejoining. For me this site provides the motivation and kind of an enforced deadline to actually get out and take photos, and it is a wonderful community where I have met so many friends, many of whom I have now met in real life.
I'm shinny and new here and have to agree that the follow me stuff seems just too needy. I didn't understand it except that I suppose with FaceBook and the like people are used to instant gratification.
Reading this, I'm concerned that I may be costing people votes for PP. I follow people so I can learn a bit from what they do but don't always comment on everything or fav with wild abandon. I hate to think that I am harming someone in some way whose work I admire.
@aponi Don't worry about costing people votes or anything like that. PP isn't that important and I'm sure most people would rather have followers and feedback over the occasional appearance on the PP.
Having said that, don't follow too many or you'll never be able to keep up! I regularly purge the people I follow, although I am currently at a new low as I removed all my followees except my sister and brother-in-law when I took a break and just wanted to keep up with them.
@wildernesswillie I am happy to follow you, but lately have not been making comments much except for those I have been close to for a long time. Part of this is burn out but also time. My son is dyslexic so i can appreciate where you are coming from..I guess this thread has been about the plethora of threads of those shouting out for attention. @mastermek nice to see you. Now I always see your work but rarely comment. @lauriehiggins I always like seeing you and was overjoyed to see @westcoastingwallis back. I need to stop and take photos each day, even if it is just one or two with the large format, or a few with point and shoot. It is my meditation, contemplation ad mental relaxation for the day. Photography has become my passion. If I start talking about photography I become totally engaged and passionate. It has saved my life.
@wildernesswillie PS there are many who make just one to two word comments so to let others no they have been past. Others won't be offended if you do that
Thank you for this insight! I'm new and am slowly finding others to follow. It never crossed my mind to ask for followers (and won't start now!). :) I've been hesitant to comment on other people's pics because I'm such a beginner and don't have constructive comments to add yet. A few have really struck me as beautiful and I've made small comments on them. I guess I'm still learning the proper etiquette.
@tracylloyd I was very shy at first too. I am always surprised by how bold a lot of the new people are. I wouldn't have dreamed of starting a discussion until I was around enough to have a flavor for the site. I like to feel my way around, find things on my own, see if someone else asks the question first. To me it makes more sense than to just come in and find our what you can get by bursting out onto the threads. This year, since I've been here, is the worse year for the people starting threads for followers, which is just a huge downer. And anyway, what's the rush? You're committing to a whole year. I think you are handling it just right. :-)
@wildernesswillie At school we talk more of picture thinkers and word thinkers than dyslexics and non-dyslexics... certainly you have a good eye! One of my reasons for doing 365 is because I'm such a word thinker, I've got a lot to learn from the picture thinkers out there!
@michaelelliott Haha; I know, right? I just finished reading through it; lots going on! I guess if I want to stay in the know, I have to shoot less and read more! :)
And what is this "PP" everyone keeps referring to? ;-)
@tracylloyd I'm new to 365, and I just allowed myself to attempt a theme/competition this week because I love seeing what everyone else is doing and thought it would be fun! I love seeing what all of the 365ers are doing--so inspiring. I have been trying to comment on photos but sometimes I don't really know what I'm talking about, so the one word "wow" keeps coming up! started this project because I wanted a creative (visual) outlet for my writing. @grizzlysghost glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what PP is! That just sounded so wrong. :)
@tracylloyd Doesn't have to be constructive if you like something.
I've tried to be 'constructive' in the past and had mixed responses :P personal taste accounts for a lot I guess!
So now I just tell people if I like stuff.
Also, on another note, since Christmas I've spent looaaddss of time browsing the 'latest' page. There's such a mixed bag of stuff which gets uploaded, but something I have noticed is that not many people tag their photos.
Firstly, that makes me stealing peoples ideas when I'm stuck more difficult (Joking, honest :P) but it means when folk like myself are absent-mindedly browsing through tags, you won't be found!
In my experience, when someone starts a thread with a photo asking for critique, they are, as you say, expecting people to say its awesome.
I quite often ask for critique, in the description, as I know a couple of my followers will always give honest and well constructed critique. They also know, I will give it back in return. So, yes, my requests are for genuine critique. But then, my balls are bigger than some other ;)
@darylo@tracylloyd I felt that way when I started too - so many new terms, acronyms, photographic rules & etiquette, ..I was concerned that anything I added would be considered unnecessary, trite or even worse...expose my lack of knowledge, or unintentionally offend someone!
365 is such a diverse community - we are all on a different journey, with varying equipment, photographic experience, subject interest, family cultural and language backgrounds, and financial circumstances. What cuts across all of these differences however, is a shared goal, and a sense of respect and encouragement for the other members. I learn from 'seeing' things through other's perspectives. If "wow" is what you feel, that's fine to say - the poster knows the image 'connected' with you, and any comment can boost the spirits of the poster when the phojo is AWOL.
Your images and your comments might change during your time on 365, but neither are ever less valid than anyone else's. :)
@amyamoeba Most people tagging 'critique-me' are happy to recieve constructive comments. I will usually start a critique by saying what I think works well, and then say "I might have.... and acknowledge 'opinions' can often be influenced by personal pereference.
@vase you have generated some interesting discussion in this thread Carla! :)
@amyamoeba I spent the first half of my project adding "critique-me" to the tags, and didn't really get any serious critique at all, just when I needed it most.
Hey, and talking about post-hijacking, what's with the guys who post a couple of shots, then follow 300 people, half of whom follow them back automatically?
While all you guys are here do you all mind going across to my FB page I've entered a competition and need your likes, votes and thumbs up!
