July 20th Weekly SH*T List

July 21st, 2018
So sorry I am late with this week’s SH*T list – but maybe we should call it TGIF this week! But, hopefully people will still have a chance to peruse it in time to include in their busy weekend.

This week’s list seems a little thin but there are a ton of challenges that need to get voted on so please do take the time to go through the discussion board to find these gems. Voting can be just as important as participation and is generally the most fun and exciting part of the challenges.

I also find that there are a ton of interesting topics to be found on the discussion board that I do not mention in the SH*T list such as Flash Back Fridays and opportunities to post your favourite Fav’s and other photos. Please go back a couple of pages through the Discussion board to find these gems that might get buried quickly when there is a lot of activity on the Discussion board.

Don’t forget to hit the link to check out the details of any challenges you are considering in case I may have messed up the dates or such.

Thanks Wendy, wondered what to do today, so did a mundane entry!!

Hi Wendy - thanks once again for doing this - it's great that you keep us organized. :) (I know I sure need it.) I was wondering if you knew what had happened to the Abstract Challenge - it doesn't seem to have appeared for ages. I don't think it can have been because of lack of interest so I was hoping you knew what stage it was at. Many thanks Rob

Re: Rob Z's question above.

The lady who won it has not posted for ages. I did send her a note on her last entry but have not heard back much. She may be sick, and so that is very understandable.

It is the same thing happened with the landscape challenge. The fellow who won posts very intermittently and has not posted since July 9th. Again, I did put a note with his winning entry – but have not heard back.

I really do not know what to do in a case like this. I would suggest that we see if the winner of the previous challenge would be willing to take over the responsibilities of the challenge if the new winner does not do it in two weeks. What do you think?

I do not mind doing this chore of keeping track of this, sending friendly reminders, and then notifying the previous winner but I do not want to appear to be a nag. I do have a bit of an obsessive / compulsive nature so I do not mind taking care of the small details … just as long as I do not offend anyone.

I am going to tag some more people for their opinion. So – what does everyone think?

thanks for thinking about this Wendy... and for raising the issue Rob Z...

my thought is why not go with the person who came in second in these cases?

i realize there is a desire to avoid disappointing the original winner, but i also appreciate the wish to keep the challenges going for everybody else...

July 26th, 2018
there are a lot of reasons why a winner has not come up to pose the next challenge.

tell me how feasible this is:

i suggest that the host of the challenge notify the winner not just on the winner announcement thread but also leave a comment on the winning photo and on the most current posting of the winner. give it a week, then if there's still no response from the winner, i'd go with the second placer (as per @northy 's suggestion) and if there's also no response there, the host should ask the third placer. i guess that's the importance or advantage in having 6 finalists, provided there are enough entries.

kind of like the miss universe contest, "the importance of the role of the runner-up: if for any reason, the new miss universe cannot fulfill her duties, the runner-up will assume the crown and take over the miss universe duties" or something to that effect. :-)
July 26th, 2018
@farmreporter I agree with @northy, give it to the person who came in second
July 26th, 2018
@farmreporter @robz @northy @summerfield At the time I won the artist challenge, I knew I would be in Costa Rica before visiting family on the east coast & coming to NS to meet up with my California family until mid-month. I tried to offer it to the second-place winner, but she, too was busy, so I agreed if everyone could wait. So the dfay my kids flew home, I posted https://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/31835/patience-rewarded-artist-challenge-the-family-of-man, and it's underway with little fanfare. I will continue to monitor it this coming week, but tomorrow we're flying back to California as I've got severe back pains and I don't just want it masked with narcotics (after 2 trips to the emergency room.) As you all noted, "Life gets in the way" frequently. Maybe we can say we'd like to enter the challenge but do not wish to be in the running for winning... Good luck... I'll be around as I can be, but not at all for the next 24 hours when I shut down my computer.

i dont think its too much of a prblem having a gap in the proceedings, some challenges get stale and when someone misses it you know it has some renewed vigor, Wendy it sounds like you are doing what you can to keep things alive but perhaps when someone misses it, they can either ask the first and second placers and if still no joy host it themselves.
July 26th, 2018
In reading the responses, what if we use a sort of 'case by case' basis. A winner is notified. Then, if winner does not respond to say he or she will take on the next challenge -- whether it's immediately or if they have to wait a week or two because of life getting in the way -- the organizer goes to the one who came in second. That would handle the situation of no response -- we just move on within the week AND the situation where someone is more than willing, but tied up. Most of the time the system works, so we don't want to make too many new rules. But it's a shame when a popular challenge/theme falls by the wayside.
July 26th, 2018
I would go with whoever came second, particularly if the winner has not posted in a while :)
July 26th, 2018
Second place makes sense although someone has to go back and work this out. I think if someone hasn't set up a new challenge within two weeks and then not responded to a message within a further week it would be reasonable for someone else to start the new challenge. Scotty people like me may be grateful for a reminder so thank you Wendy for all that you do.
July 26th, 2018
Not scotty! Scatty.
July 26th, 2018
It’s all been said I suppose. I’d go with second place or host it myself.
July 26th, 2018
Thanks Wendy for setting all this in motion. From reading all the posts it seems there is a general agreement that the second place getter be approached after a suitable time has elapsed with no contact from the winner. The only problem I can see is that it requires someone to recognize that the challenge has not continued as normal and then attempt to contact the winner and, if necessary the second place getter. At the moment it seems that you kindly do much more than just notify us as to what is open and when it's closing! It seems an imposition to then ask you to do this extra stage.
Could it be a more relaxed process - if somebody notices that one of their favourite challenges has failed to appear could they just contact you to check that you don't know anything about it. If you don't could they then volunteer to send some messages as outlined and contact the second place getter if possible or, as Mek suggested, just host it themselves. That would spread out the time and effort involved. It may however mean that less popular challenges may occasionally disappear if nobody notices that they have not been renewed. Would this necessarily be a bad thing? Thanks again Wendy. Cheers Rob
July 26th, 2018
I would go with the runner up too. After giving the winner A week to react.
July 26th, 2018
Hi everybody!
I agree with your thought: to give the scepter to the second classified, in case the first one does not answer or answers but has no way to host the challenge and go on with the third, fourth ect
We could include these simple rules in the description of the challenge, so that all the participants are aware of them.
I also think that the one who gives the scepter to the winner should check that the new edition of the challenge takes place in a reasonable time frame and doesn't get lost... ;)

Dear Wendy @farmreporter, thank you again for your priceless work!

Dear Louise @Weezilou, I'm so sorry for your back... I cheer for you! :)
July 26th, 2018
Thanks for tagging me on this. I do appreciate your listing all the challenges. It is very helpful to have it all in one place. I try to write them down, but then my lists get confused...or maybe it is me.

My suggestion for the challenges that are won by someone who does not posts regularly, or has not responded, is to maybe selected the runner up and see if that person would be willing to host the challenge.
July 26th, 2018
Thanks for the tag, Wendy. If it wasn't for your efforts in presenting your sh*t list I think a lot of challenges would fade away, I appreciate the work you put into this. I use the list to spot any missing and see where they are at and usually leave a msg on the last thread and offer to host if they need it. There has been a few this year i have chased up, they are usually the ones I follow.
There are many challenges choose from, many have their favourites and many use them for inspiration or to learn something new, they do get lost. Asking the runner up to stand into host is a great idea, basically everyone knows if you enter a challenge, there's a chance of winning and being a host. if you win, you are the host and if you can't there are plenty of friends here that will always help. I have found that usually someone notices that a challenge has gone awol and they get it going again
Sometimes a challenge needs a break to rejuvenate it but I think at least the voting needs to be done on the last one for it to finish
I have probably repeated what everyone else has said but here's my bit

@robz @northy @summerfield @adi314 @Weezilou @kali66 @taffy @graemestevens @helenhall @mastermek @jacqbb @frappa77 @henrir @wenbow
Thank you all for your comments. I think it is really a great idea to have the runner-up host the challenge in event of the winner not able to for some reason.

So - what I will do, if it is okay for everyone, in future is notify the new winner if I do not see any action, and then - ( hopefully we do not have to do this) notify the previous host who can deliver the news to the runner-up.

I will do this for both the current abstract and landscape challenges tonight.
July 26th, 2018
That is so good of you to take on this extension of what you already do. There is another thought - if the challenge has run it's time but is never judged it is a slightly different situation- which would be less likely to happen but may occur in certain situations. What do you think would be the easiest way of handling this? Or do we just wait to see if this ever happens - why anticipate problems which may never occur!!!!! DUH!! Thanks for all of your input into this. Cheers Rob
July 26th, 2018
I think we should wait to see what happens and not worry about what could happen. Life has enough worries as it is!
I think a challenge would run its course when no one enters it and then we can let it die a graceful death.
