When we moved into our house over 13 years ago there was a big woody, rather unhealthy looking rose bush by the house in the front garden. One of my first jobs was to hack it back and try and remove it. In the end it defeated me and I compromised with a pruning severe enough to kill it (so I thought). Well it turned out that that was exactly what it was after as it grew back lush green and heaving with these flowers which smell divine. I've never been quite so brutal with it since and I did learn that I should wait a bit before ripping things out.
I had a nice lunch/shopping trip with Rachel today as her birthday is coming up and she's off on holiday as soon as college finishes. She had a few free lessons so we had lunch in Bill's (as in the Brighton version http://365project.org/judithg/365/2011-04-14 and recommended by @helenmoss) which nearly gave me enough strength to tackle the waking nightmare that is Hollister. Too dark for decent pics in Bill's though so this is from yesterday. Photo class tonight - I'll be catching up tomorrow.
Oooh you know I will just love this. Really like how it stands out from your background and the colours are fabulous. Sometimes you just have to be brutal with plants that have got out of hand and more often than not they reward you.
beautiful rose (and flowers). Every winter the rabbits eat all the roses bushes (more than I would ever cut) and they turn wonderful! so I guess it's what they need :-)
It is stunning - wish I could smell it! I had a puppy that was nipping of the ends of my rose bush as the snow melted and they protruded. I finally got her to stop - and in the spring I had the most beautifully pruned bush and then gorgeous flowers that summer.
this is such a beautiful flower and I'm so happy that it was reborn! i had to chuckle at your comment about Hollisters......i remember those days when my daughter liked to shop there:)
Oh my gosh ~ this is absolutely gorgeous! You sure know how to treat a rose bush, Judith. :) Hope the photography classes are going well...from the looks of this shot you are learning a lot!
@happypat I'm convinced those poor kids will get rickets - it's Luke sending them down a mine!! @peggysirk Bit slow to be honest Peggy - I learn more doing 365 - this background was taught to me by @jannaellen...
Peace serenity and the old fool on the hill to old to rush in, thank goodness this rose fought back after your hacking..the plant i mean..not the news of the world....
awesome tones and fabulous colour - beautiful capture - I've always found you can be quite harsh on roses - they always seem to bounce back better than before!!
Beautiful bloom, you were lucky we had a mermaid climber rose when I was a child that was magnificent and for some reason it was pruned back really hard, it never recovered its vigour.
