We started our holiday with a walk along Warkworth's beautiful beach to Alnmouth, forgetting that the River Aln meets the sea at Alnmouth (the clue's in the name) and there are nasty currents that make it dangerous to cross even at low tide (despite the Ordnance Survey map showing a route across). However, Nigel 'it's only a mile and a half' (4.5 miles not including the mile to reach the beach in the first place) decided that there was more risk to his life and limb from not getting us sandwiches than from the current and waded across - much to the horror of the sandwich sellers.
Three good things:
1. Sustainable fishing
2. Nigel didn't drown
3. The coastal path back above the beach - shade for Monty and easy going compared with the soft sand (but not as much fun from the stone-skimming/paddling/hooping point of view).
@judithg
Sounds good, I haven't been to Northumberland before but it's my 30th birthday so we decided to go away and I'm really looking forward to it - I have lots of plans!
@roachling I went back to see what I posted from our 2011 trip - I was quite surprised as almost all this lot will be beaches! Didn't get to Barter Books in Alnwick this time which is a shame as it's a funky place. And I have a new favourite beach at Embleton (though Bamborough is still incredible!) I'm posting a link to the first 2011 Northumberland pic from each album so you don't have to plough through two years to get to them. http://365project.org/judithg/365/2011-08-15http://365project.org/judithg/extras/2011-08-16
The extras had a random 'other' shot in the middle for some reason!

We're staying at a cottage in Warkworth for a week.
