Cruising up Katherine Gorge - Nitmiluk National Park, Katherine, Northern Territory
We sailed through three of the thirteen sandstone gorges that make up Katherine Gorge, walking up to 1km between gorges and the next boat and then back again. The water looks lovely but is home to crocodiles, we saw some basking on the banks and some tiny new hatchlings on one sandy bank. They are pretty cute as babies.
The water rises way up the gorge walls at the height of the west season it may go as high as 3/4 the way up. We saw debris marking the height from floods several years before.
They had canoes for hire, but I cannot imagine voluntarily getting into a canoe in crocodile infested waters, I may have a dare-devil streak at times, but I do have my limits.
Beautiful scene. I get the impression most of that area is inaccessable during the wet season. After your shot of the leaping croc I can understand your reluctance to get closer to the water in a canoe.
Gosh you live in an amazing country.... through 365 I've seen views of wonderful places I never knew existed, like this one...the water can rise so far up?! No way. Incredible - and a stunning shot, the landscape is pulling me in further... (thankfully not into the water)
