Termite mounds are a big feature in the top end - I liked this one built on the race course rails

This was at a racecourse on the Stuart Highway on the way to Katherine. The racecourse/area was charmingly named "Pussycat flats"

The mounds get big in places, a number taller than 4m

On a local front, for the last 2 days there has been a kangaroo on the oval behind my house, in the middle of the suburbs, if he is still there tomorrow I'll be reporting it to ranger/wildlife as I am a bit worried about his/her safety. Then tonight when I was bringing my recycling bin back down the driveway I spotted an owl (probably a Boobook owl) on the fence between my driveway and the neighbours. Each time the light has been too low for photography so I have just paused and enjoyed the sight. I was thrilled to see an owl near my house, first time and hopefully there will be more sightings
Thats very cool. Surprised they don't knock it down if that is a racetrack?

That's a fun feature. Since the fence is metal all it does is help prop it up, it adds character to the track. Nice shot. Congrats on the Owl. I hear Great-horned Owls when I leave my house early during the breeding season. I've heard or seen 4 species in the neighborhood. I'm sure you'll have a chance to photograph your Boobook( love the name) eventually.

@tigerdreamer there were a few along the rails - which would be the outside of the curve of the racetrack so I guess since they tend to run the races more along the inside edge and the termite mounds just add some local flavour

Gosh... I thought I had it bad with ant hills in the lawn!! So funny that these are in pussycat flats!
I sometimes hear owls flying around and very rarely see them as I drive along... there is something very lovely about it. Enjoy!

these are amazing, I assume they are mostly mud. Sometimes I get too into photographing things to appreciate them for their own sake, glad you got to see and enjoy the owl!

Great capture. These mounds are fascinating and sometimes achieve fantastic size and shapes. Love that you've spotted an owl and hope we get to see it. Hope the roo gets relocated safely.
