Bramber castle, perched on a high natural knoll overlooking the River Adur, was built around 1072 (shortly after the Norman Conquest) to defend a gap in the South Downs. It fell into disrepair as early as the late middle ages and was in ruins by the 16th century. Now, the one surviving wall of the tower, standing 14 metres high, provides a glimpse of how imposing the castle once was
Local legend claims that a riderless white horse can be seen galloping around the moat on moonlit nights……….

Hi Myrna - yes, Bramber village is exactly as you describe.
The castle is a great place for a walk or a picnic and the village is good for a wander and the Inn is perfect for a pint at the end of a lovely day out!

Made me think of the Ella Fitzgerald song - I'm beginning to see the light!
@sailingmusic You've just described every village in the country. :)
