As I previously mentioned, Jared, who runs Yellow Wood Guiding in Estes, is a very well informed and talented guide. When I asked to get a hummingbird he said, "At a feeder or in the wild because I know where there's a nest and one might be sitting." Well, who could resist the possibility of getting a little hummingbird sitting on a nest? With a short, and very quiet, hike we found ourselves in a small copse of Aspens, and, sure enough, Jared spotted the tiny nest. A male and female were flitting amidst the leaves, so we waited patiently. I think they were flirting, though, as she never came to sit and Jared thought she might have been trying the nest on for size when she was observed sitting the day before. Still, what a beautiful and dainty little nest made of spider webs and lichen. I'm thrilled to have seen it, and I did get my hummingbird shot when we visited the feeders. Thanks Jared!
