There are few birds in the windbreaks now; the air is no longer filled with bird song and activity. I was surprised when a bit of movement caught my eye during my evening walk. I don't usually see downy woodpeckers at this time of year, but here was a scruffy looking one checking out the woodpecker holes from the red headed woodpeckers who nested here last summer. Nice to see a newcomer!
