How many of you played this game as a child or with your child? I think it can safely be used for the signs theme since it is a board game designed for the preliterate child. We played with our son when he was 4 and this week we relived the past by playing with Maddie, also age 4.
Here's the thing about Candyland. Designed as it is for children ages 2-6, they are the worst audience for having fun with this kind of game. Maddie, who by now you must know is generous, loving and good natured, becomes a super competitive, aggressive cheater in her own clumsy 4 year old way. And the interesting thing is her Daddy was the same way 30 years ago! Maddie was only comfortable when her plastic game piece was way ahead on the board, then attempted to switch cards and pieces with me when I began to gain on her. She then became sulky when I wouldn't fall in with her plan.
Fortunately there's a great fairytale on the box explaining how we were trying to rescue King Kandy from the evil Lord Licorice, and Maddie became more interested in that mission than getting there first. And happily bath time called a halt to the whole scene.
Next visit I think we'll leave Candyland in the closet and stick with some good books!
This cracked me up. You nailed the description perfectly.. I have played that with my kids and grandkids, and the rules were out the window and they were off to the races those little cheaters. lol. I read this to my wife and we both were laughing. Great job Allie.
You know....that reminds me of my little sister. She was the same way. In fact, I am wondering if all children were that way with this game! I liked the game. It was one of my favorites.
What a funny story! My friend had this game when I was a kid. I think my mom thought it was too "kid-ish"...we had games like Stratego, RISK, Mastermind, Battleship, Careers, Billionaire, Life, Pit, Monopoly...we had a lot of games! I used to love a card game called Flinch...fun shot and story! I see a lot of signs on that board, so it's perfect for the theme!
