We had a guest speaker at church this morning, describing his role as a volunteer for Richmond Public Schools working with school ground gardens. Since August 2010 there has been an ad hoc group called the RPS Garden Task Force. The voluntary monthly meetings have drawn an assemblage of school principals and teachers, administrators and community partners. Theyhave shared information, identified gardens already in place, helped build new ones, and tried to strengthen links between the schools and surrounding community. His purpose today was to interest our church members in participating in the upkeep of the garden at the local high school, only two blocks from our church. After his presentation I stopped by the garden on my way home. These raised beds include vegetables and cotton. In order to water the plants you must drag a hose 250 feet from a faucet at the school. That massive building across the field is Thomas Jefferson High School. The Art Deco building, constructed in 1929 and opened in 1930, has been listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Allie, what a great idea and great picture for your story. They have water wagons with wheels that can be pulled behind a lawn tractor for watering in out of the way places. Looks like they would just put in a water line.
TYour picture with the hostorical building in the back looks read great and the concept of a community garden is good. we see more and more gardens around here too. great for the kids to learn about the effort and hard work it takes to start a new garden, the growing from seeds or seedlings until harvesting. water wagon would be a lot easier than dragging the hose so far. thanks for sharing this with us. my husband has put in a garden..very small as we unfortunately don't have the space for a bigger one. we already had lots of fresh salat, chives, green onions are doing well and he planted broccoli and kale..so I cooked up a batch of kale already and froze lots of it for later. he has fun doing it of course his watering is so much easier..with two barrels for rainwater and a hose close by.
I like the way you got the Jefferson High School in the background.
I like the story you attached - nice!
