Alone at the Corner of Dazed and Confused

This is some on my street, street photography.

My young daughter, six year old Clara, saw me working on this shot yesterday and said in all serious after she found out it was me who took the photo, "Mom, were you being a spy?"

I just liked the looks of this, an adolescent girl sitting forlornly on a corner...in a hood (I like hoods). It was on the last day of school, first day of the kids summer. I was out camera in hand, waiting for my kids big dance off the school bus, and she was waiting for her sister.

She was really killing time on her phone. Surfing, texting, something. And I was killing time with my camera. Looking, enjoying the world around me, shooting.

I get annoyed at cell phones sometimes, how families sit around the dinner table and everyone is on a device. How couples are on a date and both are distracted and looking down. We are so disengaged with the world and so connected, yet not really, to our virtual worlds.

I just got a smart phone a month or so ago and spent the 10-15 minutes in a car line the other day, surfing, texting and whatever. As I sat there, I heard my name, saw a familiar face, waved and went right back to my screen. Sad. I've fallen victim to the screen, too.
Awesome shot

Great shot, nicely crafted!

Cool shot! Smartphones are addicting! We have a rule at our house, no phones, iPads, TV watching at the dinner table. Also, I don't get on it when I with my kids. I don't want to miss them growing up! ;-)

So creative. Love the addition of the street signs matching your title. FAV!

Love the street sign. Nice candid.

Love this shot. like the light colors and the position of the model. Fave.

Wonderful story! Are the signs for real?
June 17th, 2015
@cejaanderson No, I wanted to hide my street signs.

Pam
This is so clever! My 91 year old grandmother surfs the web on her smart phone. I wish my kids would call me instead of texting me. Same with my grandmother lol.

@pammerritt 91 year old grandmother texting and surfing the web. LOVE it...what a cool grandma. I don't mind it sometimes, but there should be a happy medium. I gotta say, I hate talking on the phone.

You did a great edit job on the signs, btw. They really make the image. :) Aren't we all there, for at least some part of the day??
June 17th, 2015
@rosiekerr often, sadly...yes.
June 17th, 2015
Super candid street shot, the girl and sign work in well together. I love my smartphone, so much quicker commenting than my tablet or laptop, and it anticipates what I want to say, too.....very clever 😁

We've all fallen victim, but we can fight it! Lovely image Amanda.

I agree with you on smart/cell phones at the dinner table and eating at a restaurant. LOL.....I am so naive. I actually thought the street names were "dazed" and "confused." What a creative idea for a candid street shot! Love it.

@cimes1 I guess the edit is better than I thought:).
June 17th, 2015
This is very clever. I like it! I remember the movie Dazed and Confused... great sound track!

Totally agree with you about phones...........it is so sad to see everyone more interested in what is happening in their virtual world that the person sat in front of them! Awesome shot of lassy sitting there pondering and love your edit of the street signs

Sadly enough many of our young people are at this intersection in their lives. With the state of affairs in the world and things not a whole lot brighter in the country that has always offered hope. . .
My wife and I agree with you 100% about cell phones. Americans, I know for sure, are losing the ability to communicate with one another in face to face conversations. Cell phones seem to be making us into recluses in the midst of crowds. You can't make eye contact with those who are staring at a screen. I don't know about the effect they are having in other nations? I have fallen into the trap as well. It is a tough one to break! Great social statement! Fav!

Great image and a tough subject...cell phones are debilitating by weakening the art of engaged conversation...I still have a flip phone :) because I am stubborn

great shot

That was clever putting the new words on the sign! This way to be confused! The other way to get dazed - hit by a lump of wood? There are some elderly people who live alone that I wish could use the computer or a smart phone - keep them in touch!

wonderful shot..super fav.... yes we are all falling victim to smart gadgets in our hands these days.... you hate them but can't live without them....

i hate cellphones, and all other phones. but irony is, i just got an iPhone today to upgrade my cellphone. upgrade as in i just want a good phone camera because last saturday i was once again told on the grounds of a museum that i cannot take photos around the property because i have a "professional" camera. but others were taking photos with their phones all over. so as much as i hate having an iPhone, i now own one. and i friggin' do not know how to use the bloody thing!
June 17th, 2015
@summerfield Totally overwhelmed by much of my phone, but I did figure out the camera fast. It's just nice to have a good camera on you always. I getcha. It is nice to be able to check in and have internet access, but it can easily be abused.

This is the way it is today. I call it the silent world. So nice though to actually talk to friends like today on an actual land line. My cell phone spends a lot of time on its charger. There is a time and place for cell phones. I totally agree. FAV

@pammerritt Too funny about your grandmother. I hear you, it is nice to talk and glad my son calls about once a week and my friend called today to talk. Miss that a lot. And you would think we would have more time but we all seem to have less time.
June 18th, 2015
Great image, Amanda! It's so easy to get hooked into the allure of cell phone. It happens to me too.
June 18th, 2015
So well done, I can feel the mood here
June 18th, 2015
Great street shot, sadly I heard on Sky News the other day that the majority of kids in their early-mid 20s have stopped going down the pub to drink they just stay home & use social media........now I'm not saying that drinking is good but it's sad to think that kids aren't socialising in person anymore but would rather do it over the Internet :(

Super capture.
June 18th, 2015
Absolutely brilliant! And I can relate...did you see the cover of New Yorker this week? "Play Date" -- two little kids sitting with their backs to each other on their computers. Definitely getting to be a bigger issue these days.

Funny! (Found this via the 'rant' tag!)
