For my Sunday travel post, a quick trip back to Iceland: this photo shows the Skeiƌarárjökull tongue of Iceland's largest icecap, Vatnajökull, from the South eastern Ring Road. The main icecap is visible in the top RH corner. The glacial tongues are retreating leaving bare rock and tarns, as in this photo.
There are volcanoes under the ice cap and their eruptions can lead to regular glacial outbursts, some small, and some devastating as occurred in this area in 1996 when farms and bridges were washed away, and again in 2004. A glacial outburst is occurring at the moment in the area and for those interested there is more information here:
