Evening church boat races on Lake Siljan at Mora, Sweden
In last Sunday's travel photo, I mentioned that church boats are used in summer boat races. Here they are participating in the heats at Lake Siljan.
Early on, there were often spontaneous races home from church. In 1936 the first organised rowing race with church boats was held in Leksand. Since 1936 church boat racing has been a way of keeping the tradition alive and of saving the boats. The 'Stora Siljansrodden' race series consists of several races around Lake Siljan.
