Nadelwehr, Lucerne Switzerland by ankers70

Nadelwehr, Lucerne Switzerland

'The Needles' are part of the water regulatory system of Lake Lucerne in operation since 1861. The needle weir runs across the flow and the 'needle slats' are inserted and pulled up individually as required to help control the flow of water. Early one morning we watched the slats being inserted, a seemingly dangerous operation given the speed of the flow of water, but fascinating in the precision with which the slats were positioned.

There is so much power in the water which makes this a dangerous job.
