Cockatoo Island - machinery - 7

This week I will be posting some of the machinery from Cockatoo Island.

I couldn't get closer to this one - it looks so cool I wish I could have. If you know what it is please let me know.

@annied Might be wrong but I believe this to be a HBM or horizontal boring machine. Essentially a tool which can bore a hole with incredibly high tolerances in steel or another metal. Here is a video of one in action https://www.instagram.com/p/BPq1JZ4AtxY/?taken-by=machinist_miyagi

This is great! How is it possible that everything there has been left untouched for obviously so many years?!

@georgeo it could well be - thank you George - Cockatoo Island was a Naval Ship Building Dock - an interesting history http://www.cockatooisland.gov.au/visit/our-history

@louannwarren It ceased operations and was just left abandoned - I assume all the cranes and machinery are too heavy to move - The dockyard closed in 1992 and lay dormant for a decade until the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust assumes control of the island and embarks on major restoration works. After extensive remediation works, Cockatoo Island was opened to the public in 2007. The Harbour Trust continues to actively rehabilitate the island.
