Cowra is home of the largest prisoner of war breakout in modern military history. At 1.50am on 5 August 1944, over 1000 Japanese prisoners launched a mass escape from the Prisoner of War Campsite. 231 Japanese prisoners and four Australian soldiers lives were lost.

I remember going to Antitem 2 years ago (the site of the bloodiest and worst Civil War Battle in the U. S.) and having a surreal sense of reality. It was so peaceful and quiet compared to the horrific fight that took place there. This place seems to have a similar feeling. So pretty now but back then...
