Then and Now A Landmark Decision

The Tegler building was a huge and historic landmark in downtown Edmoton for many years. It was home to offices, department stores and even the Edmonton Journal in its early days. As a kid I remember going here with my Grandmother on Saturdays and sitting down at the diner in Zeller's and enjoying a wonderful grilled cheese sandwich after she had finished her shopping.
In 1981 The city had passed a bylaw to help preserve our historic buildings as so many had already been demolished.
However the Bank of Montreal had already purchased the Tegler building and so they now demanded compensation from the city if they could not tear down the Tegler building.
So in 1982 City Council reversed its decision and allowed the bank to tear down the building so they could build there new branch
Have a great weekend everyone

Tragic. Such a loss when historic buidlings are lost. I agree with @bruni the new buidling doesn't look very attractive.
June 1st, 2012
Looks very different
June 1st, 2012

June 1st, 2012
I like your collage. It is such a shame though. The old building was so much better
June 1st, 2012
Hard to believe they tore down that old vintage building with so much character, to put up that bank building that has none!...great collage!
June 2nd, 2012
I love the "personality" of old buildings. Great collage and history.
June 2nd, 2012
OH....that's sad news. We need to hang onto history.
June 2nd, 2012
That's progress for you, neat collage, especially the demolition pic.
June 2nd, 2012
What a shame. Terrific collage and story!
June 2nd, 2012
Hope they got voted out of office; a shame to lose such a store; glad you preserved it in photos

very sad.....I know that progress must go on...but at least they could have made them build a period compatible building or at least a nice looking structure.... :(
June 2nd, 2012
These shots are so interesting. Love seeing the progression, although it is sad.
June 2nd, 2012
Wow- that sounds very shady! Someone got paid off to reverse that decision didn't they? A sorry story!
June 2nd, 2012
Terrific collage. The old buildings definitely have more character.
June 2nd, 2012
Another interesting collage!
June 2nd, 2012
@pamfromcalgary Thanks Pam
June 2nd, 2012
@leilaboyd Yes they certainly do
June 2nd, 2012
@olivetreeann I think it is a decision that the city regrets ever making
June 2nd, 2012
@maggie2 Very sad in this case
June 2nd, 2012
@maggotx Exactly. Thankfully most developers are doing that now in the historic parts of the city
June 2nd, 2012
@hjbenson I do not kow about all of the city council I do know we ended up with a new mayor after this
June 2nd, 2012
@debbim Thanks Debbi

June 2nd, 2012
So sad that that is what "they" call progress.
June 2nd, 2012
Good collage. I agree with @byrdip. I am glad that Fort Worth saved a lot of the old buildings, but it was not before they torn down a lot of them and some of them were old homes.
June 2nd, 2012
@grannysue Yes that is the same here including some old homes that can never be replaced
June 2nd, 2012
@byrdlip That is so true
June 2nd, 2012
At least you still have your fond memories! Thanks so much for all your great comments :)
June 2nd, 2012
Very interesting - makes a great collage.
June 2nd, 2012
I prefer the old architectural styles so much better. Love your history lessons. You've come up with an innovative idea!
June 2nd, 2012
Interesting contrast in buildings - I definitely prefer the old one.
June 2nd, 2012
Isn't is funny, the older we get, the more we cherish the past! I find myself giving directions to people about landmarks that are also no longer there! but it used to be!!
June 2nd, 2012
wow bkb, great collage
June 2nd, 2012
Aw, that too bad. I hate when that happens. Nice collage. :)
June 2nd, 2012
Thanks for the very interesting info. I think the old building looks grander.
June 3rd, 2012
A beautiful old building, but a sad ending to the story ...
June 3rd, 2012
Wow, that is really sad that such a majestic building got torn down. I love the collage, though.

June 3rd, 2012
@mummymorris You are so welcome
June 3rd, 2012
Fantastic collage, history and your memories with your Grandmother. Too bad they had to tear down the old building. At a glance the bank looks like a gas station.
June 3rd, 2012
@darsphotos It is a pretty plain looking building in comparison with what they had
June 3rd, 2012
I am loving your Then and now series bkb, and thank you for the commentary so informative, and laborious for you of course.
June 3rd, 2012
@frida Glad you are enjoying it
June 3rd, 2012
I must say, I prefer the old building! Another nice collage.
June 5th, 2012
Wonderful collage and information!
June 5th, 2012
@cjwhite Thank you
June 5th, 2012
@eudora Thank you
June 5th, 2012
I would not be a customer of that bank if they did that around here. More businesses need to be responsible and preserve the historic buildings, especially one that was a nice as the Tegler bldg.
June 8th, 2012
@wjw1741 I just shake my head every time I walk past here and think about this
