Abandoned and It would seem like Forgotten

Driving home from the physiotherapist's office today I made a stop to take a picture of the old Charles Camsell Hospital. It was built in 1967 and continued to serve the area until 1996. It was closed when it was condemned because of asbestos. Since then there have been several ideas of what to do with it but it continues to sit empty with no plans anywhere in the near future
Love the repetition of the windows...it looks a bit mysterious and scary!

Interesting photo, Brian. And pretty depressing image.

Oh you would think they would have been able to figure out how to get rid of the stuff. Love the story this shot tells
August 14th, 2013
That just looks so sad.
August 14th, 2013
Awesome
August 14th, 2013
Nice shot and I can understand it being closed due to asbestos. Hope you are feeling a bit better.
August 14th, 2013
About the same as our old hospital which still stands on a hill! The asbestos is the big problem!
August 14th, 2013
Another building going to waste
August 14th, 2013
Oh my goodness! I heard that it would cost lots of money to remove the asbestos. Who is responsible?
Nonetheless, you captured the sadness in this image! Cool shot!

A great capture and information.
August 14th, 2013
That's an appropriately sombre capture. Seems a great waste to see something so massive being totally useless and a burden on the community.
August 14th, 2013
What a shame to be vacant for so long!
August 14th, 2013
Very 60's build, maybe knock it down and build something more attractive?
August 14th, 2013
Rob
An interesting building!
August 14th, 2013
Very 'eastern block' - nice capture. Perhaps someone could use the asbestos to make car brakes?
August 14th, 2013
An interesting building. There seem to be a lot of places like this at the moment that are standing empty. It's such a shame if the space could be used, there's nothing more sad than a derelict building! - Lucy

Meg
Too bad...that asbestos is a terrible thing. Maybe they could use it in a movie scene and blow it up.
August 14th, 2013
Another 'Abandoned Place' then. My old school, built only in 1955,super modern, artdeco'ish, was demolished 15 years ago because of asbestos.
August 14th, 2013
A shame indeed that it can't be revitalized.
August 14th, 2013
Interesting architecture. It need time to be rediscover as symbol of that time.
A pity there is no use for it. Soon it can`t be revitalize at all.
August 14th, 2013
With the asbestos this building can't be used for anything else, or you have to reconstruct it for a lot more money than building it new,. Still a shame that its just left there abandoned
August 14th, 2013
what a waste of a big building, it must cost too much to get rid of the asbestos, it will probably just waste away
August 14th, 2013
If it can't ever be used again on account of the asbestos at least the lot should have some value. probably cost too much to tear it down too! It's really sad.
August 15th, 2013
Why do they just let buildings rot?? Such a waste!
August 15th, 2013
Looks huge
August 15th, 2013
This looks like it would be a great urbex site. Great shot!
August 15th, 2013
@nanderson Well there are stories about the building being haunted
August 15th, 2013
@cathieg Didn't mean to post something so depressing but it is a shot I have wanted to take for some time. I suppose life is what it is sometimes
August 15th, 2013
@myhrhelper Yes you would think that problem could have been dealt with. Glad you enjoyed this one
August 15th, 2013
@olivetreeann I am saddened every time I drive past here
August 15th, 2013
@kerristephens Thanks Kerri
August 15th, 2013
@darsphotos I do understand that but it could have been removed and used for something else before it ever got to this state
August 15th, 2013
@maggiemae Yes asbestos has been the downfall of many good old buildings
August 15th, 2013
@http365proj Something we see to much of unfortunately
August 15th, 2013
@sunraye Thanks Raye. It would have been the provincial government who was responsible for this building
August 15th, 2013
@thresheg Thanks Graham
August 15th, 2013
@tonydebont A big waste and now a huge eyesore as well
August 15th, 2013
@kareenking It really is
August 15th, 2013
@claireuk It really does surprise me that this has not already happened
August 15th, 2013
@jdr4690 A typical 60's look to it
August 15th, 2013
@sharonthompson I am sure something could be done
August 15th, 2013
@fishers Lucy I am saddened by this every time I drive past here
August 15th, 2013
@megmills Now that is an awesome idea. They have made a number of Hollywood movies here in Edmonton
August 15th, 2013
@ivan Asbestos has been the downfall of many buildings
August 15th, 2013
@sbolden I am sure it could be but no one wants to spend the money
August 15th, 2013
@pyrrhula Something tells me that it is beyond hope now
August 15th, 2013
Interesting capture! Hopefully good will come of the area and building!
August 15th, 2013
@khirsch Unfortunately it is the cost behind it that of course has been the problem
August 15th, 2013
@jenrobcarr Unfortunately now it is a huge eyesore
August 15th, 2013
@bruni I am sure the cost is a huge factor but now it is a huge eyesore
August 15th, 2013
@kwind A huge waste
August 15th, 2013
@sarasdadandmom A huge building which is now a huge eyesore
August 15th, 2013
@aleksandra I am still convinced it could be used for something
August 15th, 2013
It looks so sad.
August 15th, 2013
such a large structure to not have been demolished with all the asbestos. hope it is made for good use, but meg's comment was hilarious.
August 15th, 2013
Lovely capture.
August 16th, 2013
@danette The whole situation surrounding this building is sad
August 16th, 2013
@moreyoulessme I love Meg's idea
August 16th, 2013
@mittens Thanks Marilyn
August 16th, 2013
nice old building its a shame its just left there is sad it would be nice if some develpoers bought the building and restored it into nice living apartments .
August 16th, 2013
@gerry I am sure it could have been used for many things instead of just sitting empty
August 17th, 2013
How sad that it sits abandoned.
August 18th, 2013
Nice capture--sort of a spooky feeling to it.
August 18th, 2013
@nadaa Very sad
August 19th, 2013
@eudora It definitely has that feel to it
August 19th, 2013
A sorrowful sight...part of the problem is likely the expense of removing asbestos...they can't just knock it down because it would send the asbestos dust flying everywhere.
August 20th, 2013
@lynnb I know it is the money but with so many other things that they seem to waste money on you would think they could have done something useful with this building by now
