Submarine at the Mall by bkbinthecity

Submarine at the Mall

So this one is for Andrea @andreajoy. A while back Andrea had asked about the submarines at West Edmonton Mall. Yes the mall did at one time have a fleet of submarines that people could board and ride around the lagoon and get a closer look at some of the sea life that exists in the Sea Caverns. They are no longer there so I scanned this picture of one of subs I took quite a few years ago as it was making its way around the lagoon
Well, I heard that mall was big, but I have never heard it had submarines at one time. amazing

Did that fit people in it? Trying to get a sense of the scale as it looks like a toy. Really interesting.

Fascinating capture! Love it!

How interesting, I'd heard the Mall was big but didn't realise it had a lagoon. Amazed.
November 2nd, 2013
Lol that's not what I would think of finding in a Mall.

Goodness, thank you so much for remembering my question. This really is quite amazing. Not something I can envisage easily. My husband very impressed when I showed him. Even my cousin had seen it too when she visited family there. Thank you so much😊😊

November 2nd, 2013
Cool shot
November 2nd, 2013
Why did they get rid of these in the mall? I always wanted to check one out but never got the chance :( Did you ever go inside one while they were there? Neat shot!
November 2nd, 2013
That's wonderful!
November 2nd, 2013
Cool capture and it would be fun seeing that in the mall.
November 2nd, 2013
what a cool exhibit

Reminds me of the one at Disneyland! My son so wants to go to West Edmonton Mall. We've taken him to Oahu, Maui, Hawaii, disneyland, San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas, Mexico but West Ed is what he dreams of! Kids are so funny!!

The scan has come up really well! Great pic, and how nice to know that someone captured a piece of history - Lucy
November 2nd, 2013
How interesting, great shot
November 2nd, 2013
This looks like a model to me- I can't imagine people fitting in it, let alone a mall big enough for a lagoon where a submarine was able to submerge for people to view marine life!
November 2nd, 2013
Way thrown off by the lack of scale here ... wait, you could ride in that?
November 2nd, 2013
Wow! Must be a big place!
November 2nd, 2013
Lovely image - pity it is no longer there.
November 2nd, 2013
Great capture.
November 2nd, 2013
Yeah this had me thinking it was shorter than a loaf of bread, like a bathtub toy?

@vickisfotos This mall has had a whole lot of different things over the years
November 3rd, 2013
@taffy Yes you would board the submarine and go for a ride on it. I can not remember how many people it held but it was a fair number

@sunraye Glad you enjoyed this one Raye
November 3rd, 2013
@tonydebont The lagoon holds the replica of the Santa Maria, which I have posted a couple times. It also holds the area where they do a sea lion show and the sea caverns
November 3rd, 2013
@http365proj They seem to be coming up with new ideas all of the time at the mall
November 3rd, 2013

November 3rd, 2013
@archaeofrog Yes it held several people
November 3rd, 2013

November 3rd, 2013
@pandorasecho looks can be deceiving
November 3rd, 2013
@kimshots They seem to make some major changes every once in awhile
November 3rd, 2013
Well never seen anything like this in a mall! Thanks for sharing!
November 3rd, 2013
That looks like a fun experience. Too bad they stopped running. I think they had something like that at Disney years ago.
November 3rd, 2013
Wow, that mall must be huge. Great shot.
November 3rd, 2013
That must have been something. wonder if maintenance was too costly in the long run. interesting though.
November 3rd, 2013
what an interesting concept, thanks for sharing
November 3rd, 2013
Before I read this amazing story i thought this must be a toy or model submarine. Somehow I don't connect subs with Edmonton!:)
November 3rd, 2013
Joe
Awesome...glad she asked and you posted! They had these when I was there long LONG time ago, didn't know they weren't there anymore. Memories.
November 3rd, 2013
@maaikel You're welcome
November 4th, 2013
@cimes1 Yes Disneyland did have one like this
November 4th, 2013
@anazad511 Thanks AnaZad. I do believe it is once again the largest mall in the world
November 4th, 2013
@bruni I am not sure what the reason was that they took them out
November 4th, 2013
@hjbenson You're welcome Harry
November 4th, 2013
@tristansmum I am sure not to many people would make that connection
November 4th, 2013
@rellimdj I am glad I have this to remember it by
November 4th, 2013
@bruni Did a little checking and found out that the revenue vs the cost of maintenance was making them a losing venture
November 4th, 2013
This must of been interesting to do when they were working.
November 4th, 2013
Too bad the submarines are no longer available. I'm sure it would be the only opportunity for most people to ride in such a conveyance.
November 4th, 2013
@carwyn3 It was not a bad ride but once you had gone on it you most likely would not go on it again, at least for awhile
November 5th, 2013
@allie912 I am sure that was the case. Unfortunately it became to costly for them to operate vs maintenance
November 5th, 2013
Sad that they stopped the service… Nice nostalgia shot. Looks almost like a toy, doesn't it?
November 12th, 2013
@bankmann They stopped it due to the fact that the maintenance costs outweighed the revenue they brought in
