The House That John Built by bkbinthecity

The House That John Built

Located in the heart of the river valley in Edmonton is the John Walter Museum. John Walter was the first millionaire in Edmonton. He came from the Orkney Islands in Scotland. He started out as a boat builder for the Hudson Bay Company here. Over time he managed to start up a number of his own businesses one of which was a sawmill. He also operated a ferry to cross the North Saskatchewan River due to the fact that at the time there were no bridges in Edmonton.
Located in Kinsmen Park which was then known as Walterdale are three houses that John Walter built. These are in fact the original homes and today sit quite close to there original locations.
This is the first house he built. It dates back to 1875.
The museum is open on Sunday afternoons and is free to the public.
It is such a charming little cottage...beautifully captured.Love the light and shadows.

Nice shot. I like the simplicity of it.
August 12th, 2014
Such a nice shot and love the setting. It is wonderful that they have kept this house as a museum, or have I misunderstood, as so many dated houses or buildings are destroyed or changed. FAV
