An old bakery ghost sign. A nice story on the blue plaque - in honour of Dawn Butler MP for Brent Central and the first female of African-Caribbean origin to serve as a government minister (in Gordon Brown's cabinet). Long before her political career, she grew up in Waltham Forest and used to work in her dad's bakery on this site. Now a community farm kitchen, you can still see the yellow sign on the right 'Hot bread at Butler's Bakery - West Indian and commercial bakery'.
Had to pull over sharpish on my bike when I saw this lovely blue wall. I'd met Hilary for a cycle ride. We'd cycled through the marshes, along the Lee Navigation and down the River Lea split by the football fields and ended up at the Olympic Park where we stopped for tea.
A short cycle east to Cann Hall Road - past this and another interesting ghost sign - and onto the Lakehouse Hungarian Restaurant to meet Jane who I haven't seen for yonks. She's had bad hip problems for a long time and she's recently, in good news, had her first op. Next one due in the autumn. So she's walking around a bit more now albeit not far or fast and with a stick.
Great to catch up and this place was an absolute find - shame there was no one else in there (although it is quite small). Looked like a cafe - but was more like a restaurant. Friendly chap serving - I had what I called Hungarian fish and chips - freshwater fish coated in a sweet paprika batter with the yummiest of chips. Followed by 3 crepes filled with chocolate, cottage cheese (I know odd, but was good) and cinnamon.
Cycled a straight route back via Green Man roundabout, Whipps Cross Road and Wood Street. Caught my breath back at home before mum arrived. She wanted me to sort out her Freedom Pass change of address. I did that and Dave made her a watermelon and vodka cocktail. Baked potatoes for supper (didn't think I'd ever eat again after lunch, but I managed somehow) with Sing - what a great animation that is.
