Onion strings by busylady

Onion strings

I'm surprised to see that my shed actually looks quite organised here! Whenever I step in the door it's seem to be complete chaos. I've been stringing onions today and putting the rest out to dry. I've also cleaned up the shallots ready to store. Thanks for all your comments - I'm always so thrilled that you've taken the time to look and comment especially when it seems to have been all vegetables and flowers lately.
Three good things
Plenty to eat when others have so little
Lots of rain today which gave me time indoors to catch up on the housework
Friends who call in unexpectedly

nice Pov

There is something about a shed that is so comforting...love your onions hanging & all the necessary stuff for the garden, it does look very organised Judith!

Your shed has such a homely industrious look about it, and seeing those strings of onions brings back memories o the Breton onion man coming round on his bike carrying strings of onions around his neck to sell .his onions in the village . We never bought any as we had a good veg garden & Dad had strings of onions of our own hanging in the shed !! You've brought back happy memories to me ,Judith !

Love this shot....can I ask a silly question? What do you do with the onions? Do they dry or is this how you store them? Never heard of doing this.
August 16th, 2013
@eyesmile It's not a silly question at all. I've learned over the years what to do. First I leave the tops to fall over before I pick them. Then I lay them all out on a flat surface in the shed t olet them dry. Then I cut most of the dried tops off, leaving about 3 inches to tie them with. Then I string them and hang them up in a dry place. They will (should) keep like this until next Spring! The French always string their onions - I don't think I do it properly. I reckon of you google 'how to string onions' it will probably tell you!

What a fun shot -- are these from your garden? The shed as background is wonderfully colorful.

Love how you string the onions to dry. So nice. Great shot.

love your words and love seeing your shed, it's great to reflect on how lucky we are

@taffy Yes I grew the onions but not in the garden. I have an allotment which is a piece of land I rent from the council.

I wish my shed looked a tidy as this! Mine isn't really a proper shed but a lean to at the back of the garage just to store my tools but it's not big enough and always looks higgledy piggledy! Really nice colourful composition Judith. I've just been so busy that I've hardly had a minute to comment but hopefully I will catch up soon

@rosiekind If only you could see the floor - there's hardly a place to stand!

Colorful and fun shot. My shed is scary to go in!

Great capture,looks very tidy!!

Looks like a good crop -should I assume that my onions won't grow any bigger?
August 17th, 2013
@judithg I'ts been a good year for onions, but once the tops have fallen over they've stopped growing and you can pick them and let them dry off.
August 18th, 2013
@busylady I've still got tops on - hoping they'll get a bit bigger!!

It looks very organized and quite pretty. I've never strung onions. What does that do? Keep them from rotting?
August 18th, 2013
@vernabeth Yes it's a convenient way of storing them and they last well without rotting.

This is a great, fun shot of such a simple part of life. I love all the color and the brightness. The onions have a great shine.
