Catacombs

We seem to have visited a lot of archaelogical remains while in Sicily! These are the catacombs at Ispica. The caves in the area have been in use as dwellings since the 4th century and again some were destroyed in the earthquake of 1693. This burial chamber had been very neatly cut into the rock, but very little in the way of bones or artefacts were found as they had been destroyed by peasants.
What a magnificent capture. So interesting.

You couldn't walk along here could you? Were there bodies in here originally?

@maggiemae No we couldn't walk along here and yes there were bodies in here originally. It was fascinating to see how the tombs had been so carefully carved out of the rock. We were lucky to have bumped into someone who was doing a tour otherwise we wouldn't have been able to access this area at all. Thanks for your interest.

Fascinating to see these famous archeology sites Judith. Something we have heard lots about in school but in my day never saw photos!
