This is the boat which took us back fro our trip to the power station on Lake Manapouri. You can see the penstocks in the background from where the water drops 180 metres to the turbine hall below. The equivalent of 8 Olympic swimming pools of water passes through here every minute and is used to create electricity before the water is released below into Doubtful Sound. The power station actually makes enough electricity for the whole of the South Island although 80 per cent is used to fuel the nearby Aluminium smelter. It doesn't seem to make sense. We visited the vast turbine hall by coach and heard the fascinating story of the power station.
Such a beautiful area Judith. When I visited NZ many years ago we went on a boat overnight on Doubtful Sound - it was a magical experience!! Your photos are making me want to visit again!!
This is another lovely photo. We visited NZ over 20 years ago in a camper van when we were young and before we had thought of having kids! We spent quite a bit of time in the north, but had to rush our visit to the south, so never got below Queenstown! It is a beautiful country, and I'm reliving it through your photos!
Lake Manapouri looks beautiful
