On this trip to Haiti my job was to help the local Haitians build benches for the clinic. As a retired Industrial Technology teacher, I felt that even with the language barrier I would be able to teach these men to properly use these hand tools.
The first man grabbed the saw and promptly held it vertical. I was ready to stop him and show him the proper way to use the saw but for some reason I decided to watch for a while before I would instruct. To my amazement this man cut better than any American carpenter I had ever see. I was so glad that I had not tried to show him how to use the saw.
So often as Americans we believe that we know the best way to do everything.
