European Starling by cwbill

European Starling

The European Starlings were brought to North America in 1890. One hundred birds were brought to Central Park in New York City in an attempt to have all the birds which Shakespear wrote about be in the new world. They are pretty birds during the winter but what pests they have become.
A lovely shot, I love their marking and iridescent tones. We have too few here for them to become pests ;-)

I can imagine that starlings are pests, but they do look beautiful don't they.

Super close-up. I didn't know that about the starlings being taken to NYC

Beautiful bird but they can be pretty mean to each other and to other birds… I haven’t seen too many this year. Very interesting info about the birds… thanks for sharing.
