I went in my backyard and saw a flower vase that I've left out on my glass outdoor table for far too long. It's almost full of rain water, with some various yard debris, and now some floating dead insects. Depending on the angle of the shot of this depressing vase (save the cool green of the ceramic glaze), I could capture clouds, the now-bare winter trees in my back yard, the faded rust-colored table umbrella, the siding of my house, even the contents at the bottom of the vase, or my bothersome head. I was trying to focus on the dead bugs.
While I was shooting, I was reminded of one of my favorite characters Eudora Welty created: Clytie--the spinster stuck in a sufficating household who finally drowned herself in the rain barrel after taking a good look at her reflection. I wonder what (if any) contents other than her self existed on that cool glass surface.
