Holy heck, it's fureeeezing down south and we have no snow to show for it. So this morning, my husband took a cup of hot water out in the yard and threw it up for some instant snow.
This is one of those times I wish I had more impressive things to say or show, but I have spent the day with tutoring sessions, discussions with Mexican lawyers, and LR5 videos. The last activity confirms I have dug a huge ugly mess with this program. Seriously, I'll fly anyone here who can sit down with me and work all this crud out. I'm just so mad at myself that I didn't get my "workflow" determined before I started using this amazing and wonderful tool (oh, yeah, ONLY IF YOU START CORRECTLY). Whatever.
So here's some snow. I still don't have the export thing down. How the heck do ya know what settings for making your "final copy" from RAW into Jpeg, and where does it go? Back in the file? To replace the jpeg I imported or should I just drop the whole RAW + Jpeg thing I'm doing. I have watched 3 hours of video today and no two are in agreement. Calgon, take me away!
And jeez, if it's going to be single digit weather, SNOW dagnabbit!
In the first place single digit weather is too cold to snow. And there must be moisture in the air to create it.
You on the other hand have created a terrific shot of it!! You ARE on your own with the prcessing!! I haven't a clue what you are talking about so you are already light years ahead of me!!!
@grammyn Ok, Miss Science! :) It's just such a shame to be in such frigid weather and not enjoy some snow with it (for the kids, ahem, of course).
I have welcomed some techie woes in my home...all of my own doing, but I believe I will muddle out eventually. When this frost clears, should we think of a date next month I can come see you during the day? :) You can email me if you prefer. I should be able to do a day trip during the week if you are up for it in mid-Feb.
Looks like fun. I just shoot in RAW. After my edit I export the JPEG with the sRGB setting, sharpened for screen, but with only about 75% quality setting because I can't upload very big files. I haven't noticed any color discrepancies in my uploads. Like you, I just jumped right in with editing and didn't do much about organization. Now I'm afraid to learn how big a mistake that was. Hoping to learn from you!
Just where is your husband's coat?? I was just reading a blog from Reed Hoffman about organization. He taught my Nikon class. Perhaps if you google it, it will help. I like him and follow him on Facebook.
That's amazing how it turned to snow!! I use Aperture and it somehow magically converts all my shots from RAW to jpeg. Good luck with your learning curve!
What a great way to insure you have snow and end up with such a fun shot. Reading your comments about LR5 was unnerving as I thought that was such a useful program to use! Mmmm...I think I'll stick with Aperture for now...until you have it all sorted out and can run a tutorial for us!
@taffy it IS an amazing program. Taffy, I used it for abour six months without really considering the workflow order. It's abilities as a catalogue are potentially the best thing that ever happened to me. I just need to harness it appropriately. Because I started off doing things in a haphazard way initially, im trying to bactrack and start all over. It's not LR. It's me. :/
@purplehaze I promised myself to tackle RAW in year two. It does make a diff in processing but converting and saving for max effect is hard right now. I'll get there. I forget how long it took ne to feel comfortable in manual. Now I cant shoot in anything but manual!
Like you, Daryl, I've been using LR for about a year now and don't know what I'm doing. It's probably too late for me to fix things, but for the first time since I started 365 - I can find my photos!!! Before LR, my stuff went from iphoto to photoshop. Then when I was done beating my head against the wall, my photos would disappear. I'm done with iphoto and photoshop. Now, I import from my camera into the LR library. Then select the one that I want to work on and move it to Develop. When I'm done with it, including naming it and resizing for the web, it goes back to the library - where I can find it easily. A professional would probably shudder at my mess, but it's working for me. Good luck!
I have watched friends struggle with LR for years. They claim they love it, but have periodically "lost" photos and spent a ton of time getting them back. Their workflow takes hours where mine takes minutes and doesn't include LR. However, I organize my photos the old, old way with a database I started with slides back in the days of DOS computers. No way I could scrap that and start with LR! Good luck.
It is good to meet your husband here, and to see your attempt to modify the weather.
@rvwalker I have never lost photos, and quite frankly, it's hard to lose them in LR as they are never really IN LR--they are just manipulated by them there (they exist on the hard drive). My issue has been not establishing a consistent workflow from the beginning (as I thought that they were IN LR). Had I started a system when I got it, I would be golden. And once I get it all organized, it will be a gem in terms of retrieval, creating collections, and even just pulling up photos of any subject I like in a second, but forethought is important. I didn't pay attention to it because I didn't think I would love photography as much as I do. So, it's a headache now, but it would not have been if I'd taken the time to actually see how to properly set it up.
One of my issues with doing 365 last year was that there was so much to do in a day and getting my posts in took precedence. I was more focused on getting it in than how I might be putting these things on my harddrive and saving them for later! Now I have the time, but I have started in on the project again. Something has to give. I'm thinking I may have started in too early. :/
I think what was happening with my camping buddies is LR would lose the links to the photos. The photos were on the hard drive, but they could no longer find them. There was a recovery procedure they had to go through to reestablish the linkage. I know what you mean about 365 taking precedence. My web site and blog have suffered for a year, and I need a break followed by a permanent reduction in 365 participation at some point. But this is too much fun to give up!
@rvwalker I agree about the fun. Such a great place. I'm going to just keep going as much as I can. I haven't even loaded today's shots--was playing with my wide-angle some. :)
Daryl - I'll give you snow - come on up! ;) Totally agree with Bill - never too cold for snow. We have gone from 0C to -25C over the last month and it snowed on any given day.
Welcome back, Daryl! It's so good to see your posts again. Love this shot. Such a creative way to share the crazy cold you are having in GA. We both took most of January off. It felt good to remove the pressure of having to take a photo and keep up with the commenting. I, too, am working on a new approach for myself. I suspect It will be a much reduced presence here.
As for LR5, I too am one of those who was just eager to start editing in LR and totally bypassed the Library feature. I know I need to focus on it, but haven't had the time yet and am frankly a bit scared as to what I will find when I do. During my 365 project, I created file folders on my hard drive for each month and day of the year. I would first download from my camera to my hard drive and place the images in their correct date folder. Then I would open LR and import the shots. I edited the few that were in contention for a 365 post and when finished exported them to a "LR Edits" file within each of the date folders. Somehow I gave LR the instructions to create a folder in each date folder for any edited exported files. (Can't remember how I did it though!) I actually export out two versions - one for digital use @ 72 dpi and one for print at 300 dpi. I have those parameters set in the export box and just select which export I want. Also, I mostly shoot raw now, too. LR exports in jpg. I wish I could remember how I set up the export instructions, but it didn't seem too hard. I am sure you will find a tutorial online for it. What I haven't been using and want to add is a tagging and rating system. That will help with the finding of things later. I am sure there is a better way, but I thought I would share what I do. Good luck. Do let us know when you settle on your perfect workflow.
@pflaume Oh, thank you Lisa for this explanation. What I'm realizing is that importing directly to LR (actually, it's just being managed by LR but going directly to my Hard drive) has been a good start this year. I'm starting to use the tags and experimenting with just this year before I go back and try to fix my messes from last year. The tags are important. I like the star rating systems others have in place too. I will be trying to put my newest updates in a narrative soon. And I will be purchasing a book based on Frank Hymus's recommendation--I need to be more serious about cataloguing, and I hate having such a sophisticated system and not using it to its fullest potential. What I can see is that if I get the whole workflow down and the export system correct, I can do many things with little headache. :) So nice to see you here on my page. A delight! :)

Good luck with the RAW - I haven't attempted it and I think i t would just make me long for the days of p&s..............

He starts out with the workflow. It's never too late to start over. I have.
