Alexandra Redoubt by dide

Alexandra Redoubt

This is the Alexandra Redoubt (near the small township of Tuakau) in the lower reaches of the Waikato River. The redoubt was constructed in 1863 to protect the British Naval fleet that transported troops and provisions, while battling Maori to secure the Waikato Region. The Alexandra Redoubt is 90 metres above the river with a lovely view across to Pukekawa. It is also a small cemetery and has some interesting historical headstones.
Beautiful view and image of the Redoubt and great editing... well done..

I like the finish you have chosen - indicating old and 1863 must be pretty old for NZ!

Thanks for this interesting peice of NZ's history but it's rather poignant when one considers the events that required it's construction. Interesting processing that works well here.

wow Dianne I was so surprised to see where this picture was taken. I live in Canada and have visited NZ only once but this is right beside my brothers house in Tuakau. When I visited him I walked his dog everyday through the redoubt and woods around that area. It is such a beautiful area.

@allred3 How amazing - when I am putting captions on photos, I often wonder what use it is putting in the names of small towns, but then I think, maybe someone in NZ will have been there! Now, the fact that someone who lives in Canada has recognised the name of a small town means that I will always put place names in the captions. That's an amazing coincidence. It's a lovely spot and we only ventured part way down the track as we were short on time. Next time we will walk the whole track and think of you in Canada!
