Another image from Tiritiri Matangi Island. Each morning, we would get up early and head down the track to sit in the bush and listen to the incredible dawn chorus. The tui sang first, then the bellbirds. Around this time, the seabirds would join in as they flew off to feed, then the saddlebacks and stitchbirds had their turn. If you were lucky, you would also hear a few (of the 62) kokako that live on the island too. They have a magnificent spine chilling call, ending in a flute/reed like single note. It seemed like this time of the year the kokako weren't performing their dawn chorus like I've heard in the past. Of course, while the dawn chorus is happening, the light is arriving in the sky and was just beautiful too.
