Whelks are fascinating creatures - they have a terrific sense of smell and can detect a decaying or ill shellfish from 'miles' away. These whelks are gathered on a piece of dead fish at low tide and are fighting to get their share of the goodies.
When we went to Shetland for our holidays, as kids, we used to gather whelks, boil them up, and eat them, casting aside the little sandy tip. A bit rubbery to eat, but not disagreeable! However, looking at these scoffing a dead fish, I'm not quite so keen! Great capture and information.
I learnt something today Dianne! I have never given a thought to what whelks ear of any other shell fish for that matter. Fascinating how they are all gathering round munching!
