Grain! Beautiful grain!

October 30th, 2012
I just tried to post a discussion so if this pops up twice I apologise.

Anway, I wanted to see your grain shots. I love a bit of grain and I thought it would be nice to see some other shots all in one place.

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but I think grain can add interest to an image, a sense of nostalgia and can make shots artistically supreme. We all love digital because we can get those megapixels point sharp and clear but a bit of grain gives another dimension don't you think?

Post your shots and your thoughts on grainy photos :0)

Here is a shot of mine I've added specifically for this thread:

This is what happens when you fiddle with ISO settings and have no idea what you are doing!

@harley84 I really thought this was a statue at first! Great shot!

@shweetheart It's all about accidental learning hehehee! :0) I think it adds film effect!

I tend to add grain to b&w and sepia images. I like the added feel it gives to those pictures.

@tandem02 sweet shot!

@lynnb hahaa, I thought some people might think that! Lovely shot

@alisonp spooky and sinister looking shot, the grain definitely gives it a film feel and the iron is just fab, chrome and other metallics look great with a bit of grain!

@mikehamm I agree, I think it can help with details and interest :) I love the car!

Taken on Jessops own brand 100 ISO b&w film (actually, this generally came out with coarser grain than most reputable 400 ISO emulsions):

I haven't used it much, but loved how it enhanced and softened this photo. Lots of great samples here. Also, I thought that this thread was about wheat and such (that kind of grain:).

i find that grain works nicely to give a noir effect... i try to work with it when i am stuck with it, on the theory of make the most of what ya got... like when i am shooting hand held in low light and have to boost the ISO...

Comp isn't fantastic as I was still learning how to focus the old lens on my film camera, but the grain of this 800 speed film is awesome!

My nicest grainy shot. I love it cos my 11 year old son took it spontaneously across the dinner table with my old p&s.

This is probably one of my noisier shots, I tend to associate grain with being something far different to noise.
