I am working towards having on-line video photography training but i need your help in getting over a technical hump. :)
I have created a video that explains the importance of focus from the photgraphers point of view but I need to see if other people (aka you guys) can view it.
I have having issues viewing the image but that could be because I am in the same building as the server.
If you would be so kind as to have a look at this like and let me know:
1) that you can see it
2) the quality
3) recommendations as to how I can improve the content
I can see the text and donate button which takes you through to PayPal OK, A shot of you ( portrait and event photographer) but when I click it the video Is just saying ' please wait video loading'
Nope, doesn't work for me either. Just the message "We are unable to connect to the content you've requested. We apologize for the inconvenience." And yes, the intro image did come up. Good luck! (Also recieve should be receive)!
the donate button appears and eventually a 'play' button but when I click it I get ' we are unable to connect to the content you requested. We apologize for the inconvenience' - no picture
I'm on google chrome.
I was unable to view the vidio also..got the same message as Gillian..I did see the intro frame and that is all..i am using Internet Explorer right now but i usually use Google Chrome , but i can see the Gemma was not able to see it using Chrome either! @agima
Not playing for me fella, get the play button, with your face but then we are "unable to connect to the content you requested. We apologize for the inconvenience"
@agima No worries. Your server is only able to give me about 10kb/sec bandwidth presently, so your 30 minute video will take roughly 2 hours to fully download. I've tested it from a couple of North American datacentres, you might need to talk to your hosting company.
The video loads now and starts playing but ever few seconds it pauses and I have to click play again. I'm on my IPad, could it be my Side? I have tried playing other videos from YouTube and they play fine
@agima I'd recommend hosting it on Youtube and embedding the player on your website. Hosting videos yourself rapidly becomes extremely expensive in bandwidth if they have any appreciable audience. You'll also get much more 'passing trade' on Youtube (or if for some reason you don't want that, you can hide it from public searches).
Hi still not working for me. Am using safari on iPod. Get through to the donate screen with the video link, press play and it just constantly loads but doesn't play. Then get message "sorry timed out" tried several times and no luck. :(
I'm the same as Jase, loads but then just keeps saying buffering. Although it started again and I got all the way to 29 seconds this time. I could well be my connection though to be honest!
@abirkill I agree. There is a bigger plan in place. This is just the first steps. ;-)
Its all a work in progress. Its a line between user pays and free content.
I might have to talk with my upstream provider and see what I can arrange.
@andrina@gemtumble Thanks. I must say I am surprised it played on ipod and I dont think it is your connection I think it is the pipe going out of my office that is the issue.
Well hello Brendan!!!! ;-) clearly patience is not my strong point! Left it loading and yes I can see it. Nice red stick men. Have to give it chance to load a while before watching though otherwise just keeps stopping as needs to buffer again. Can you do one on using ND filter?? Bought a 10 stop one on advice and then told as beginner will never use it so very confused!!!
P.S. I keep Buffering...and listening...and Buffering ...and listening.....I assume eventually it will totally load and i can go back and watch the whole thing at once?
@andrina There are plenty of free tutorials online for all kinds of photography, including ND filters. Gavin Hoey's tutorials are very good for beginners, here's one for using an ND filter like yours: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jxdw79OWaI0
@ellimae Fohkus is a mindset.... ha ha ha... Looking at the bandwidth going out it need help.
@andrina I am happy to do videos on what ever people feel they need. Now having said that I am kind of limited to the videos I can do as I need to be connected to the computer as the mic is not a remote mic....
I will have a bit of a play around and see how it sounds using my 500D. If it works then I can film on location and give more videos of location shoots.
@agima Are you telling me that i just buffered through that whole video ( by the way i really liked it and i did learn from it! ) and now you got it fixed!! lol...just my luck! :P
@mastermek No I didn't know, so thank you for letting me know.
@frida ha ha ha... I doodle a lot... I don't think there is a meeting I go into where I don't get hold of paper or a white board... ;)
@ellimae Just think now you can watch it in full speed an you don't have to wait for the second time... ;-) I am glad you learned something from it.... I would hate to think that it wasn't helpful....
@agima Eureka!! Now could you read me a bedtime story nightly. Wonderful voice. I'm actually distracted from the doodles and the pictures by your soothing voice.
It's loading quite quickly, and everything seems to be working just fine. Thanks for sharing. I'm about half way through. More pictures and less doodles would be my only opinion. Otherwise, great information.
watched, listened, didn't have a problum with the fohkus but was disapointed there were no Feesh and Cheeeps, was mesmerised by the stick figures, liked the portrait examples very much (thinking you use manual focus exclusively?)
Given you mentioned depth of field and aperture to control your focus but didn't refer to examples of numbers for aperture (except once of 11) I am assuming you are aiming to an intermediate knowledgeable audience? already aware that a larger aperture/smaller fstop number results in a narrower dof?
@agima Wonderful the second time around!! :) Now i have it bookmarked and will play your " nice " voice,( in the background) when i read your comments and critiques on my photo's !! lol....Goodnight Brendan! Looking forward to more video's :)
@agima loaded really quickly on iPod touch. Straight through to link. Buffered within a few seconds and played straight through with no problems. Excellent thanks very much.
Ok, its working great now.
If I can be honest I would say there is some time where nothing is happening on screen except your voice,(eg title scenes) at these times it is easy to lose concentration especially for someone like me who is a visual learner, I kept wanting you to hurry up and 'show' me what you meant. eg; at the beginning "what is focus?" was on the screen with nothing else for quite a while. Maybe less time on the title scenes?
You have a great clear voice, and I liked when you used a combination of photos and drawing. I look forward to seeing more :)
Yeah, it works fine here! And I found it very interesting, as well - hopefully, I'll be able to incorporate some of that stuff into a few of my pictures now...
It'd be good if you spoke a little louder, though - particularly at the start, I was turning the volume up on my laptop to hear the commentary properly! ;)
I was able to view the first video just fine, but it did take quite some time before it started. It may be that some people did not wait long enough for it to start. Very interesting and informative, I must say.
The second video link you posted loaded immediately for me.
Wow that was awesome. Not only are you a GREAT photographer but you can draw little people so well.
Now that I have watched it I am going to have to be sure to put it into practice. Thanks for a great lesson.
@mandyj92 I am not sure I can work on the voice other than recording when I have a cold. ;-)
Point taken on the doodles. Its kind of a hard one as I dont want to have it so I am just showing off my photo and some of the concepts might be hard to explain. Was it the doodgles on the blank pages or the ones over the actual photos?
@emjay8 Thanks and good points about the target audience and not mentioning the F stops. I didnt mention them as I wanted it to be about the concepts and not so much about the technical/settings and with that I was thinking it should be a good place to start for the beginner. Going off your comment I guess that might not be the case as you thought it was for the intermediate.
@henrir I think the main problem the others had was they were all trying to get it at once, then when you tried some hours later there was bandwidth to send it to you.
The video loaded just fine for me. It actually loaded quite well--sometimes I have trouble loading videos because of my lousy connection, but I didn't run into any of the buffering problems I frequently get.
The content is great. I especially liked getting to hear your thought process on how you took the shots.
Apologies, I have also just realised, that, I never said this is a really fantastic thing for you to be doing. Especially on a site such as this, with so many varying levels of knowledge and skill's. So, just so you don't think me the ignorant pom (you may well anyway), good on ya sport :)
Just finished watching your video Brendan and thought I'd give you my feedback since you asked so nicely! The video loaded just fine and the clarity/quality was great. If I might offer my humble opinion on a few other points. The content was good. I think you explained your points well. In the future try to avoid saying "ummm..." It's such a natural thing to do, but many times people perceive it as uncertainty. In this case you are the professional who is teaching and training, so you shouldn't be pausing or hesitating. There were times that I thought the red pen was entertaining and there were times I found it distracting. My thought would be (if possible) instead of scribbling around on some of the examples, could you highlight the areas you are talking about (as in making that area stand out from the others)? For example, when you are talking about 2D and 3D focal points, instead of scribbling around the back grounds, highlight the spots you are talking about (such as the center flower in the second flower bed shot). I know that when you are speaking about certain components of a shot it should be obvious which ones they are, but sometimes people really do not SEE what they're looking at unless they see it separated from the rest of the picture. I hope this is making sense! I think I would like some of the dialogue to be a little more concise and direct. You don't have to tell me about which picture came from which wedding, just tell me the facts about the picture. I think your advice is very solid and helpful- so getting right to it will strengthen your presentation. People seem to be crunched for time and to listen to videos like this on the run- so short and sweet may be to your best advantage for repeat views as well. I enjoyed seeing your work, your obvious desire for excellence and sense of humor. I particularly liked "the chap who was quite pleased with himself"! Great shot! I hope this is helpful- obviously it's my opinion- and could be considered artistic notations rather than constructive advice. Best wishes on your video endeavors!
@jase_h No dont of you like that. All feedback is welcomed and thanks for the words of support.
@olivetreeann Thanks for your feedback, I really do appreciate it and I appreciated your HONEST feedback even more.
It is information like that that helps me and in turn will help others when they watch.
I must say its a very good point about being direct and that is something I will use in my next one. The length of these is somewhat of an issue as some of the context is hard to explain in short videos, but I might look at splitting them up into smaller videos.
Once again thanks.

Did a intro image come up where the vid should be?

It wouldn't accept my 10k donation neither ;)
Can you have another look for me please?

Oh then I will fix up the text. ha ha ha ha...
And still buffering, now playing :) You don't sound like I imagine :)
And Just a black box, no play button on Chrome
It sounds like I might have to move it to another server, Thanks for all your help, i couldnt figure it out without you guys.

I'll stop the thread-jack now

Ok - Round 2.
Can you try this link?

Can you tell me about the performance? i.e. did it take long to load, do you have to buffer...
@frida ha ha ha... I doodle a lot... I don't think there is a meeting I go into where I don't get hold of paper or a white board... ;)

I did notice that myself when I watched it back, but I thought I would put it out there and see what people say. So point noted for next video.
The sounds volume is an interesting thing. I did turn it up on post but I guess I need to turn it up a little more. Thanks for your feedback
Thanks for letting me know.
Thanks for the feedback and yes you should starting using this info in your shots.
The content is great. I especially liked getting to hear your thought process on how you took the shots.
Thanks for letting me know.
Comment me when you post as I would love to see what you come up with.
