So did you all gain a little perspective last week?
This weeks’ theme may seem a bit tricky at first glance, but really it’s not…
Tomorrow, March 13th sees us into Week 11, and the theme is:
Technical: Split Tone
Split Tone is an editing technique where the shadows are toned one color, and the highlights a second color. Split toning is often used with color grading in the media to give a scene a desired look and feel.
Tag: 52wc-2017-w11 - make sure to use this tag along with any others you might be using.
So what’s split toning all about? Many of you will be familiar with it, but I’ll admit this is a technique I haven’t explored much at all – I knew what a split toned image was in theory, and I’ve seen many fantastic examples, but beyond the Lightroom split-tone presets (which I love by the way), I haven’t learned how to do it properly. So, for the benefit of anyone in the same boat as myself, the link below will bring you to an assortment of Photoshop, Lightroom, GIMP (which is free), and Aperture tutorials (with great image examples).
Unfortunately I couldn’t find anything on how to do it with Picmonkey, or any of the other free editors – if anyone knows of a way please let us know in the comments!
If you don’t have PS or Lightroom, the VSCO app for iOS and android allows you to make a basic split toned image on your phone. It is quite basic but some cool results can still be achieved, and it’ll work for the challenge if you don’t have anything else. I had a bit of a play with it and made a couple of test images using pics I took on my camera and imported to my phone, so if anyone will be using this app, I can post the images if you’d like to see them.
And finally, if you’d like to be added to the tag list for the weekly reminder, or if you’re on it and wish to be removed, leave a comment below and I’ll make the update.
@cmsfk70@ingajohansson Excellent :) I post a weekly reminder each Sunday evening with the details for the coming week's theme, so I'll add you two to the list to be notified of the reminders.
