Northern Flicker

Day 223 of 365: Northern Flicker

2015 August 11: This afternoon my son and I heard a bird calling from the vicinity of our poplar trees ...When we located the sound, it was coming from a young Northern Flicker sheltering high above us in a hole atop our tallest poplar.

In this photo, I was trying out some different effects; I liked the contrast in this one that made the flicker stand out.
Great shot and love the high key!

@cashew Kathy, northern flickers live year-round in all of the United States ...We in the east have the yellow-shafted, while they are red-shafted in the western states. They have such a distinctive call and are such beautiful birds - I hope that you find one near you!

Good shot! We've got them around here too but not in our backyard. We hear them in the woods all the time but only the Red-Headed, Red-Bellied, Hairy and Downey Woodpeckers come to the feeder. The Pileated is out in the woods too but we don't often see them in close.
