2016 January 4: I was thrilled to see these two Northern Cardinals sharing the feeder with a Downy woodpecker ...but just after I snapped this pic every bird in our yard flew off in a panic. I looked up to see a hawk soaring overhead, and realized why these birds had stopped eating and stared at each other for a moment before swiftly flying for shelter!
You captured a special moment in time! They're always so in tune with their surroundings, never letting their guard down. It is fun to see this combination of cardinals with woodpecker, and I really enjoyed your commentary!
Good caption for this photo. The birds seem to be saying just that. Over the years we have seen hawks pick off birds at our feeder once or twice. It happens in a flash.
How cool! I love when different species work together at the bird feeder!! I almost missed the woodpecker, it blends in with the cardinals and the tree!!! Love the small downy ones better than the big woody ones. Fantastic capture! FAV!
