This is my collection of sea glass collected over many years from around the British coast but mostly from beaches in Devon, Cornwall and Pembrokeshire.
I have been lucky to find just a few pieces of rare cobalt blue glass known as 'sapphires' of the beach which usually comes from old prescription or perfume bottles and I also found a glass stopper.
The glass is probably mostly from Victorian glass bottles or even older, some of which may have come from shipwrecks and over the years of the action of the sea the broken shards are ground down into shipwreck glass. (Best viewed large to see the lovely colours).
What a beautiful collection Emma, and what a lovely picture it makes spread out like that. When I was little, and went to a Lake Ontario beach near my home, I used to see many pieces of water-worn glass; but when i looked for them at a beach on Toronto Island last summer, there were none. Too much plastic around now!
I adore seaglass too. Saw some jewellery made from it recently -. I have never heard it called mermaid's tears before, but from now on will never call it anything else.
@neatz Thank you - notice you're from around here as well (lovely image of the Octagon Room at Orleans House) @tristansmum You're absolutely right, there is less and less to be found on our beaches as well, but an increase in the plastic. Mum helps organises a monthly beach clear-up down in Penzance and groups of people pick up the non biodegradable rubbish and sadly they fill literally dozens of bin bags with plastic. @jantan i had never heard of this term until my mum gave me the earring with a little typed note to go with them from the craftsperson, it is a lovely names, especially as @tristansmum pointed out they are getting more difficult to find.
