I was looking forward to today as I am using part of my birthday present from Mum and had booked a three course lunch for two at the Michelin starred Galvin La Chapelle. Needless to say, on a day we were trying to look smart it was hammering down with rain and very windy. We had to get to Liverpool Street (via the ‘Drain’) and so were rather windswept when we arrived. I was not sure what to expect as it is obviously a place for expensive business lunches but in the event, both the food and service really were excellent.
We started with a glass of Champagne (Colin downgraded to a Bucks Fizz). For starters I had smoked salmon and cream cheese compression with cucumber and elderflower… for main course seared sea bream, coco beans, gnocchi and pumpkin and I finished up with Valrhona chocolate ganache, chocolate sponge and orange. Wow.
I had worried that we would still be hungry when left but we were most certainly not. Rather than take the tube again we found a bus that took us all the way back to Waterloo and a chance to see a lot more… hence the rainy window shot of a classic London scene with bus, taxi and rain.
Later in the evening I knocked up a lemon cake for Colin’s birthday tomorrow and despite feeling full earlier, we had a cheese and biscuits later in the evening!
