9th January 2013

This is the Walnut tree in our back garden in the late afternoon sunlight (yes that is correct - sunlight!). It is a lovely tree which is now about 35-years old, having originally grown from a nut from a neighbours tree, buried by our resident squirrels or at least one of their ancestors.

It is fascinating to watch the year progress as the leaves start off red and change to green over the spring. The tree becomes positively laden with bright green walnuts in late summer but never once have we ever had one to eat as the squirrels snip off every single one before they ripen. We know the culprits as the walnut juice stains their fur giving them dark brown beards and bibs (photo opportunity for the autumn perhaps?!).
Great to read about this tree and see the light on the branches. We have walnut trees but no squirrels, only possums!

Did you order this sun - we saw none of this today down south!! Lovely tree picture would love to see it though the seasons.....

@maggiemae - Oh dear, I think we were the only people in NZ to be excited to see possums and definitely the only people to stop the car to avoid hitting one at night in Kaikoura. Grey squirrels here, although non-native (from the USA) are not such a big problem as the possums are to the NZ trees. @nicolaeastwood - It was grey this morning but suddenly brightened up after lunch. I think a photo each season could be a definite idea for the Walnut tree :-)
