12th September 2013

A bit of a damp day in Mammoth Springs but the lack of sun enabled me to capture this view of Angel Terrace. I saw what I wanted but needed my long lens to frame down to just the tree stumps, steam and white of the calcium carbonate (travertine) from the hot spring. The trees have all been killed by the silica from the hot springs permeating into their roots and the calcium carbonate is coloured orange by ‘thermophiles’ - heat tolerant algae.
It must be a spectacular site!

Looks like a painting. Great colors and emotion.

This is so beautiful, it looks as if you did some processing, but perhaps not as you're on the road? Love everything about this, but am sorry for the trees. Fav, of course.

@helixconcepts @danette @tristansmum Thank you all (and for the 'fave' ;-), I was quite pleased with this. Actually there was very little post processing other than brightening a little (it had just stopped raining and was a bit grey) and upping the contrast. It really was this colour. The trees here in Yellowstone are all white and look amazing but sad that they have been killed off!
