Photographing kids' sports is what made me fall in love with photography and get a DSLR. I love to share my pictures with the players: I post them and allow free downloads. Even though my player is in college and the games are often televised and stills of the games are in the newspapers, they still ask for my photos. I get shots of players who seldom play, of warmups and of guys on the sidelines--and sometimes of the big plays. I see my photos on Facebook pages of players I hardly know!
In high school sports (at least in Louisiana) professional photographers sell action photos of the games. Because our high school was small, I could go on the field with the pros. My photos weren't good enough to hurt their business, I learned by watching them, and they willingly shared tips with me. I recently checked out the website of my friend Robert Montero. He still has photos for sale, but he's also shooting peewee football and allowing free downloads. His way of supporting youth sports....
