Gretzsky, is our oldest, and perhaps our best cow. She came from Saskatchewan with her first calf at her side in 2002 and has given us a calf every year since. She is now 13 years old, and still in great shape.
Her tag number is 99, and she has acquired her name from the Great Gretzsky - one of the best hockey players ever - and wore number 99 on his jersey.
I uploaded this picture - even though it is a couple of years old - because she was AI'd today. Hopefully she will catch! Her due date will be April 27, 2014 if she caught.
AI means artificially inseminated. We prefer to do it that way so we don't need to keep a bull around - we rent a bull after we have AI'd all our cows so that he can catch any girls that did not take from AI. And, we really like it if he leads a life of leisure rather than being a busy boy!
Love the name. She has a nice set of horns on her so I would imagine the bull wont mind passing her by, or is it common for your cows? Hope we get a picture of the bull when he arrives.
These old cows are so special. Do you leave all your cattle to grow horns? We have to de horn in NZ, usually by gas de budding when they are calves. Otherwise it is difficult to get them into saleyards or works.
