Free Style Silhouette

Anne @365anne was my get pushed partner for the week. She read my profile and noticed I said that I have changed as a photographer since starting 365. She then challenged me to find a way to represent that change in one - or more – shots and in any way I chose.

I began my project as a diary, recording my life as it happened. It was pointed out to me that I was a reactive type photographer, never creating photography opportunities such as still life and such. I did not realize that I was photographing what the camera saw and not what I saw.

It isn’t until a person realizes that we ‘see’ things around us in our mind’s eye, that in our mind we add something more to the picture to make it more alive, or take something away to make the important stand out.

So, as a photographer I now attempt to take – and make - photos that are what I see in my mind’s eye – to put the focus on the way I see the world. This is causing me to learn the limits of my camera and learn a little post processing to boot.

I wasn't going to enter this in the get pushed challenge but then, as I realized that this is another photo taken this week that pushed me to test the limits of my camera. As you can see, it was taken at 6:30 in the evening and it wasn't really as dark as it shows here.

I also realized that I had to get low to position the skate boarder against the sky – because that it how I saw him in my mind’s eye but not how the camera would have recorded him if I photographed him from a standing position.

The skate board park in Alexandria is rapidly becoming one of my favourite spots to go for action shots and down-right fun shooting. The boys are always eager performers and do their best work when someone is there with a camera!

For the B&W silhouette challenge and get pushed challenge.
