As a child I used to ask who the "grumpy man" was. As the main post office, a cinema and various shops were in the square I probably asked far too often and never remembered the answer.
I passed the statue when visiting and thought I would take a photo and find out more about the square.
The square was created in 1881 when the market buildings were demolished and named after a branch of the Howard family who were major local landowners at the time.
This statue of Edward V11, by Alfred Drury, was installed in 1913 and unveiled by the Duke of Norfolk on 27 October 1913. I'm not sure if he still looks grumpy, but he does look rather solemn.
That is a very nice looking building. like the shape of the balconies or are they called something different since they seem to be short in depth. that iron work looks so neat. of course I also like the statue and the history of it
@monkeykid@dolphin@pyrrhula@bkbinthecity Thank you. I've never really taken pictures of Sheffield a situation I am beginning to rectify when I visit my parents. It is a city of change so I am going to have to be quick to capture some areas which evoke special memories. Katharine
@padlock Thank you. The pigeons decorating his shoulders flew off as I approached and just left me with the leaves. I will have to move more carefully in future. Katharine
@witchyjacq Thank you. I would have liked to take more shots of the square but traffic and the fact that I had a train to catch were constraints. Katharine
@bruni The building behind has shops underneath but the upper floors are interesting. The windows do not have balconies but the ironwork is reminiscent of them. There is probably a technical term but I don't know what it is. Can any one help? Katharine
Interesting history too! :)
